Sloppy NIG @ ITS BEST!! Shoelace belt!!

Ok so i lose my credit card @ the atm. I notice when im around the corner of my house tryign to pump gas. I hop back in the car and drive 20 miles back to the atm by my job. @ 3am on the freeway my lights turn on and engine temp starts 2 rise. IM like great. So i peg leg it all the way to the bank maybe 1 mile from where the problem started. I pop my hood and find that my alternator belt / waterpump belt is no more. So its 3 am i have no tools, no triple A, no money. I start thinking of what im gonna do to get home. I search around the car and find nothing useful. Until i came up with a idea. Use my shoelaces. It sounds stupid and it sounds like its gonna slip and it isnt gonna work, but shit i was stranded and it was worth a shot. I took off my laces opened my bmw tool kit and see what i could do. I loosed the alternator with the crappy bmw tools, tied the shoelace to the alternator/ waterpump, tighten the alternator and prayed. I jumped in the car with my burnt hands from all the hot metal. And the car turned over. I was able to drive @ around 55mph in 5th for about 15 miles before it started to get close to red on the temp. Got off the freeway and drove @ 35mph the rest of the way home! It worked. I couldnt belive it. Slipping and all it gave enough power, and enough friction to turn my alternator and water pump so i could drive home 20 miles.
It amazed me that we pulled it off with such little tools. Flash light, bmw tools and my shoelaces. If this isnt the most ghettoest thing ive ever done in my life i dunno what is. W.e. it worked. Its 432 am overhere im beat. Now onto the pics to prove it.

    and a pic i took @ target

    Good times.

Well when you live in hialeah, its 3am no money, no tools, no car, you come up with shit. I picked up the daily corolla and went to the 24/7 autoparts and i already got the belt. sloppy nig style ftw!

I think you should have left it like that, just got a new shoe string, incase that breaks.
good thinking though, my worn out brain, would have never even thought of that!

True fact, but consider this. I have AAA Roadside Plus service (not to be confused with their insurance....this is separate). For around $75/year, you get free towing up to 100 miles, a service you can utilize a few times annually and if you run out of gas, they will send out someone with ~5 gallons and dump it in. I've had to take advantage of the towing service once, but when I did it was totally worth it. If I had to pay for the towing myself, it would've been close to $250 (that's three years worth of this service).

Of course, its hard to deny a durable shoelace is cheaper ;-)

I never posted this, and don't mean to jack the thread...

But...I was in some back road in Brookings, SD and my gasket between the throttle body and coolent lines going into it blew - spewed coolant everywehre.

I unpacked every tool and bit I had (had everything I own) and I played with it for an hour trying to figure out a way to rig it. (I do have AAA, but I knew I could get somewhere first! And, I was in Brookings - a good 60 miles away to Sioux Falls, where I was staying over spring break). After about an hour and 7 people stopping to ask if I needed help (yea...crazy) I remembered that I had one of those plastic elbow clutch pieces for the master cylinder - joined the two hoses going into the throttle body with it! Drove a bit, realized I had ZERO coolant, and pulled into some place and used a 32 oz cup and made 6 runs back and forth between the drinking fountain. Drove around the entire day, and made it home just fine. I was so proud of myself! :D

That shoelace idea was damn good though! Don't know if I would have ever thought of that!

The funny thing is, I called my dad and asked for ideas, and he said to just call AAA.

NO - the way I see it, I'll waste an hour to two trying to fix it, rather than have to deal with getting my car towed.

Other than that, my E30 has never left me stranded! lol
