I am part of the statistic, not the resistance.

i have a friend who just got accepted to the wharton school of business after graduating with some rediculous GPA. His parents paid for everything (including his new ML benz SUV), and he never had a job. Instead, he focused that energy and free time into becomming one of the best students in his school, has studied in China, volunteered in third world countries, and is now getting into the best business graduate program in the nation.

I have scholarship, but my parents pay the rest (albeit a very small amount after scholarship) of my tuition.

When I have kids, they won't be allowed to have a job in college so they can focus their time on school and what little social life they can conjure up. However, if they fuck up, the funds get cut.

Point is, don't rail on a guy because he's getting comped.

However, after reading the post about not needing the degree, i highly recommend just going to work. If you want a vanity degree, don't bitch about school. Also, if you want a vanity degree, its likely that you aren't terribly smart in the first place.

I'm not part of the resistance either. I'm simply making an observation. If everyone is already aware of it I guess it's just another repost.

I get paid to be a freelance journalist, I work for whoever pays and needs work done. I also write marketing papers and such. In the past I've done work for Pod Mania Magazine, Subie Sport Magazine, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), Sudhian Media LLC, and Daily Tech.

I'm not going into massive debt, Its only at about $15k right now, should be done in another $5k or so. And by the time I graduate, if I did choose to pursue a career in Industrial Design, I already have my foot in the door with most companies.

Unlike you I do like to have a backup plan.

Ted, my point was this fucker is in school, and he's on academic probation, etc. Nothing stupidier than parents dropping grands on kids and them fucking it up.

Albeit this guy is going into debt to get bad grades, so I guess it is his right to...

College is not for everyone. Some people do get by quite succesfully without it. I mean hell Bill Gates dropped out, look at where he is? I have a friend that has a good marketing job at Apple who dropped out of college too. There are a lot of success stories, you just gotta get off your high horse and accept it. Because in the end its not really what you know, its who you know.

                in the breaks/summers, I intern.
I'm just wondering, but what does getting paid by Purdue in schlarships have to do with him?

Not everyone gets schlarships, and I'm included in that.

I don't think Heeter is saying that scholarships make your education any more or less meaningful. I get $22,000 a year to go to my school but I am still paying about $12,000 total in student loans for my entire education. It's worth it to me though.

And Tuanies, its not like none of us are getting experience either. Heeter has a job at a big corporation as well, and I am getting lots and lots of money doing freelance photography and web design, as well as contracting work as a director at www.indieatlantic.com

Hey, don't me annoyed by me, be annoyed by the fuckers getting paid for by their parents and flushing the opportunity down the fucking toilet.

If you are going to go into debt, get your monies worth then. Get educated, get experience with internships, and have some fucking fun.

some advice from a graduating friend:
I think I speak for everyone graduating when I say, we are not the lucky bitches. Talk to just about anyone leaving school this semester and they will tell you they would love to have just one more semester. Enjoy your time at Purdue. And do me a favor, in your last semester, when all of you are at Harry's or Stack's and someone starts talking about how great it is going to be to get out in the real world and be geting some real income and be done with class, smack the shit out of them.

He asked what I do for a living. My occupation is being a student. that's the answer to the question he asked.

I'd much rather only be employed in breaks and focus on learning/school/fun than be like him and fuck up school while working.

Hell, even without being backed, I'd rather get good grades and get in more debt than screw with my education... which is the reason there is college... unless you're this guy who is getting a piece of paper to make his parents happy...

I am getting my moneys worth, I just got a bit jewed on the advising side and had to take a couple of classes I didn't even need to. I wish I had time to do an internship, not many companies like people taking off for a couple of days for press events. Balancing both is a pain in the ass, If I had the choice to just go to school and have everything paid for, I'd be all over it, but I'm not that fortunate and have to make due with what I have. Not that I don't enjoy my job, I love traveling, I love being the youngest person at every event, and some trade offs had to be made.

But you shouldn't just call everyone a moron because their priorities differ from yours.

Ok, i see what you were getting at now.

                          Completely understood.

I'm doing my best to get my monies worth...whereas my roommate is not. I think he had 13 credits last semester and 13 this semester - dropped a 4 credit class this semester and a 3 credit one last semester. I think he has a 2.7? Not sure, but he doesn't even try - and it kills me to see someone whose parents are paying for their college, and have them not even try to do well. The kid is damn smart. I sit their struggling with stuff, and I still manage. So, I definately see your point.

My school is probably cheaper than others too, tuition this semester was like $5500 for me, and that's not bad at all.

You guys get schlarships from the school or from third parties and whatnot??

This sumemr I'm not doing an internship, but hopefully next summer I'll get some experience in the work world. Looking forward to it! :D (no one hires freshman around here...meh - could work for Micron in Boise, but...I'd prefer not to work on an assembly line for $9 an hour 12 hour days...)

I was talking to Sean, but yeah. If you feel you are getting a value from this, fine.

But there is no freaking reason to being close to being kicked out of school. Get your shit done and under wraps, or don't even bother.

(by that I mean, screw school if you don't need it... you are absolutely right it's who you know. if you have an in or a career, don't let your parents' desire keep you from that. most people go to school to get an in at companies, and education is just something inbetween. although I think college can be a good positive enlightening experience, it is not necessary)

There's just no reason I see to get on academic probation.

Yea I initially wanted to become an Electrical Engineer, saw the math requirements, shuddered and became intrigued by Industrial Design because one of the professors teaching the entry level Engineering course had his own design firm and such. Designing things was more my cup of tea and I do very well in those classes, its just stuff like....math, and micro economics >_< Not all Asians are good at math.

A lot of my peers have jobs in gas stations, retail, bitch work, golf courses, blah. Worthless.

Try to get something at least a little related... or respectable. Future potential employers aren't gonna be impressed by Walmart cashier.

Most engineers debate changing majors, I think the dropout rate is 50%, some being grades keeping them from staying, others by choice. ME + MBA is a good combo.
