It shows your parent's car at the bottom of a gravel slope. How fast did it get there, and how did it get back up?

Took me a couple of cars of my own, driven only by me, to realize that a lot of my parent's car troubles were the result of my lead foot and enthusiastic but un-schooled driving style.. "oooH, that's what happens when you do x, y or z!"

My dad's w202 did go through a few transmissions when I started driving it hmmmm

I think so.

What I didn't mention in my post is that my dad is actually a car guy, and knows what he's doing. He's built motors, swapped motors, etc., and still has his '68 Charger he bought new... but he's 67 now, and I don't know if it's stress, or money (he just retired, and he's a bit worried about that... and stressed out as a result), but to me it seems like he's losing it. Or he's just burnt out and doesn't care anymore... which is a strong possibility, since he's had a lot on his plate the last 10 years or so. He's also very, very, very cheap.

not my parents.. but my uncle, who is a car guy, has put 3 motors in a smart car (first gen)
last i heard the car had north of 200,000kms (120k miles) clapped out everything and a transmission that takes moments (4 secs?) to shift.
During dinner my brother dared to mention that the car may not be the fastest thing around to which my uncle became furious and proceeded to yell at him for the better part of half an hour.

This same man has owned everything from alfa gtvs, gtv6, 155, 156, and a host of awesome bikes.

Maybe it comes with age?

Probably. My dad's owned a few original Z cars. BMW's, Peugeots, OG Corollas...MK1 German Ford Capri....I must say, this is an all-time automotive low for him

I've had 2 Volvo 850 turbos (got each one with well over 100k), never had any engine or transmission problems on either one, and I mistreated them really, really badly.

The problematic cars all come from era in which volvo was under fords ownership.

I think the issue is with the newer ones. Old Volvos were tanks

I've never really driven that car much, I was refering to the 245 which I drive quite often. It's fast, but an overall boring car to drive.

My dad built a Datsun 510 track car back in the late 80s-early 90s. Such an awesome car. Flared, caged, built motor with mikunis the works. I remember being little enough to be able to stand where the passenger seat was and hold onto the cage while he took me and my siblings for rides around the block.

He got upset that stuff was getting stacked on it in the garage.... So he sold it for around 3k in the late 90s.... :( he still regrets it and so do I!!

LMAO. Hey! Just cause the newer Volvo's are junk, doesn't mean the old ones are!

We have owned a 1992 245 since new, I drive it most often now.
It has nearly 400,000 miles on it and has had no problems compared to that POS 2002 XC70.

I love THAT car to death.

Volvos must have the shittiest auto transmissions in the world. My brother bought a 2003 S60 and within a few months of buying it (~70k miles) the tranny blew up. He spent 4k replacing it. Now it has ~130k and the tranny is about to blow up again.

As for my parents, my Mom had a nightmare with her Range Rover and after she bought a brand new GLK350, and my Dad just bought a 2012 328ic with 20k on it. My parents are finally letting me help them get cars and they are both happy.

My brother on the other hand has a euro 190e 16v that instead of maintaining has let it sit and bought the Volvo and now owns an Acura TL that he is getting bored with.

I recall freeride mentioning this situation about his parents dumping good money after bad on that POS. I thought he wasn't clearly explaining how bad of an idea this was, despite them using new/rebuilt parts.

Sometimes, parents just don't understand.

I blame those misleading Volvo advertisements "Volvo-for life" crap.
