      Regardless of when it started, there's no *tradition* behind it. Your father didn't walk you out to your first car and tell you to pick a name for it before he handed you the keys. You don't break a bottle of champagne over it before you start it the first time.

          I grew up around cars, and been around car guys older then 99% of this forum. I don't recall any of them naming their cars. And honestly I always thought it was a girl thing to do.

                I call mine Kane.. After my son. . It's costs me as much. .i don't know what's he's going to do next. . Sooner or later something will be broken..thinks he's bigger than he actually is. . Cocky sunnaofbeeeechhh!!!

                    Ahh welllll. As for the tradition part of this, I never saw it as so rigid that my dad had to walk me to my first car and name it before I drove it. Maybe it's because I just brought my first car home after I bought it with my $$. This isn't that serious. Not every car my family has owned has been named. Many have, it was a just a question in the "off topic" forum

                      & jasonc as have I, and most old heads also did not name there cars from my expirence. Though some did and some called them "she"
