All I have to add is I can not wait to swap my auto. My wife has always driven manual until her current car. I was asking her if she was going to mind when I switched the very over, especially in heavy traffic and she said, "Heck no, you get so used to stick it's like second nature. I never even think about it even in traffic." God I love that woman.

According to that article, there were more manuals made last year than in 2011 and it should grow next year. I just think there are more cars being built and sold. SO those manuals are probably just in bare bones Corollas and Cruzes.
We own an automatic and 3 that aren't. Its so wide open here and we do a lot more freeway driving, that I don't even mind. I mean if I row through the gears 2 or 3 times then shift it into top gear and cruise on the freeway for 30 miles. I don't really care either way for a daily. But I do admit the couple shifts I make do make me pretty happy, except in the morning commute I'm usually too sleepy to notice and at night I am too tired to care.sigpic

HOWEVER, I drive 1-ton trucks on a daily basis and they're all auto. I've been waxing back and forth when I go to buy a 1-ton diesel myself if I'm going to go manual or auto. I've driven the 6-speed, which is really more of a 5-speed because 1st is so low. Second that with the shift lever beig as long with as much slop and it's not an overly enjoyable driving experience. Vague at best. Furthermore, I would argue it's actually a lot slower 0-60. These new autos with their select-a-gear are a big step up compared to auto-boxes of the past, but I don't personally trust their longevity. So it's a toss up - driving expereince now, trans repairs later?

Epic, yes. But who would buy it? I can't see any of the soccer moms here in Canada going for it.
I hate it that the current BMW diesels have no manual option. Dumb.Estoguy

I agree that manual trans are great, and I think they should be more ubiquitous. I think we need less distractions via a center-mounted touch-screen TV and in-flight entertainment and more driving involvement.
I'm not too old, but I have been suffering from joint problems that cause terrible inflammation in my body. The manual trans in my e30 does exacerbate the inflammation and after driving I usually have to "walk out" the stiffness and pain in my knees.
So now, for me at least, the newer paddle-shifted sports auto's are very appealing. I recently drove an 2011 A3 TDI S-Line with H&R Cup coils and the s-tronic tranny was great. Near instantaneous shifting, up or down, and very quiet and smooth at any RPM. Getting out of that car I have a lot less pain.
I am dying for an M-Sport F31 330d with 8-speed paddle-shift. No one here can tell me that it wouldn't be an amazingly fun ride specifically because it doesn't have a manual trans, however a lot of people do have a preference.
EDIT: Pic for reference.

Allison auots last for fucking ever if you keep them maintenance. The Ally 1000 in my truck is designed to make a lot of heat and handle it, it would not have a grade brake feature in it form the factory now would it, it would not have been standard equipment in many medium duty trucks either if it were not. I have let my truck sit on the limiter and the grade brake for miles coming down out of some mountain passes with 12k plus hooked up, and in my FIL tuck (1 ton DRW) with 16k ish out back. Yup trans temp gets up about 230ish but has no ill effects, cools as soon as you get back to flatter ground and get off the lower gear and get the converter out of lock up, it gets back to a nice 200ish (using the correct ATF helps a bunch when it comes to heat control). We have a 4star siting in the drive that has a GVW a little over 16k, I know a little bit about towing heavy shit in steep country, a lot of that time on gravel and 2 tracks. I will reiterate I will take the ally over the manual any day of the week.
The automagic in larger trucks is a expensive option and the new freightshakers claim better economy with a detroit auto box than conventional. Allison autos have been around for ever they are practically indestructible if you keep up with a decent maintenance routine.Last edited by mrsleeve; 10-20-2014, 04:15 AM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.
