I had a similar injury, but less bloody than the OP when I was replacing the output shaft seals on my diff this summer. I was pushing the spindle back in and had curled my fingers around the end. Fortunately, my buddy was helping and got me out quick. The nail was bruised and took about a month to fully come off. New one growing in now.

Ryan, the image of your fingernail has been burned into my mind. I don't even want to imagine how that felt when it was torn out...

You don't know pain until 5 seconds after you smash your finger and almost get it ripped off. My nerves were having a dance party in my finger and there was no off switch. It was the kind of pain that makes you go crazy because it's so intense and only gets worse for the first 5 minutes.

And then you can't use it for about a month. Any light touch makes your whole body cringe. Even today, I never got all the feeling in my finger back and it's a slightly different shape as my pointer finger of my left hand.

Word! It wasnt car related, but when I was still cooking for a living I was cleaning out a stick blender and forgot to unplug it. I hit the button while my finger was in the blade guard. Will it blend? Yes it will.
I have had my share of painful injuries including braking my foot in five places. Let me tell you blending my finger tip was the only injury where I almost lost my stomach contents and past the fuck out.
There was a nice CSI style blood spray on the wall from where the blades spun my blood out of the blender.

Well no really, undoing those bolts that feel really stuck, I can just imagine cranking on one, breaking it loose, and having a nice deep
rusty cut 5 inches up my arm haha

When it comes to working on cars I really safe about what I do. Worst injuries is punching shit when I have seized bolts. Or burning my self with the welder

To all the people punching shit when a bolt breaks loose, this is EXACTLY why you should always pull a wrench/ratchet TOWARDS you, never push it.

I pulled it towards me, and punched myself in the face. Stupid expansion valve bolt

Sometimes, you can't. How are you supposed to pull a ratchet toward you when it has to go toward an immovable object or blockage? In my case, I was tightening a bolt, and it was the lower frame rail near the CAB lollipop in one direction, or the strut housing assembly in the other. The only way to get that last bit of torque onto that bolt was the push the ratchet away from me.

BTW, that thumb still hurts. I'll often crack my thumbs by putting them inside my fists and clenching them, and on that hand, I still can't do it.

In those situations, I always push my palm against the handle, without wrapping my fingers around it.
