Sorry I dont think of depression as an "illness"

there is a bit of a stigma

    all with out the "help"

even though they dont want or really need your help to get by in life.......

General Practitioners hand out scrips like a pezz dispenser to anyone

we dont have the facilities to house and handle them

prescribe this little pill and all your troubles will go away"
Wow. You don't EVEN get it. This is exactly what Mr Burns is talking about and why he brought it up. The brain is a complicated organ, just like all the others in the body, and no one yet understands exactly how it works.

When your kidneys fail, they can treat that, and no one says, ohhh, he's got problems….

People who need help, really DO need help - you can't just make it go away, or "buck up." It can be completely crushing and debilitating for many people - can you imagine not wanting to stay alive?! You can't - few people can. What could cause something as unbelievable as that?

My son is in pre-med and works part-time in a hospital psych unit. The things people have to deal with are unbelievable - they are not "just sad."

For you, Mr Burns… You have my full support and understanding.

Come for the cars and stay for the show!

I sincerely appreciate your genuine understanding. I'm one of the lucky ones who can work, live, love and function...now.
I was literally "not myself" for a solid year. I won't get that year back but what I've gained in knowledge and power to fight this disease is worth it's weight in life.

I'm not upset at Sleeve, I'm not here to force my views on the subject anyone.
If there's any take away from this thread is that maybe there is someone out there on R3v, who's like me. And to simply let them know they're not alone and that just because you have something like this, doesn't define you. Your define you. That simple :)

Major Depressive Disorder or "Depression" has a strict diagnostic definition. It isn't merely feeling "sad" or "down". There are providers that will toss pills at patients that don't meet diagnostic criteria, and that's really a disservice to the patient. Thankfully, it's a minority of them that do that.

As far as treatment for debilitating psychiatric diseases such as bipolar disorder (more specifically, those with severe manic episodes or rapid cycling disease) or schizophrenia (in all of it's different flavors), there really isn't a good long-term solution for the care of many of these individuals. There are psychiatric hospitals that can deal with their issues acutely and provide them with psychotropic drugs to help their psychoses, however, providing medication and care long term is the real issue. There just aren't places to go for the individuals with severe disease that literally cannot care for themselves. Unfortunately, the alternatives are often the streets or jail.

I'm not sure how many of you have dealt with a bipolar person during a full blown manic episode or a schizophrenic person with severe acute psychosis, but it's quite the sight...

Great show to watch is Homeland (Netflix only?).
Main character Claire Danes does a bang up job portraying someone who is bipolar that goes through manic phases.
What's worth the mention too is oftentimes a patient will undergo several years with changes in diagnosis, which often leads to changes in treatment which supposedly are literally a nightmare in itself.

There currently is a big push (at least here in Canada) to combine cbt therapies along with adaptations in mindfulness practices along with western medicines for the best effectiveness.

From the studies I've read and experienced, the medication can get you to 75%. The 25% is up to you through diligent practices and learning new ways to think cope, react and so forth.
                I'm a prime example.

Now I'm not perfect, it's a lifelong journey yet as for something I would of scoffed at the idea on practicing mindfulness years ago, I can honestly say it's changed my life.

I have dealt with, or witnessed rather, both of these situations, and it's heartbreaking really. One changed my life forever; over 5 years ago when I was hospitalized there was an 18 year old girl there who was in the midst of a major manic episode. She would sleep probably an hour a day and spend the rest of the time constantly moving. Though she understood her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, she seemed totally unaware of how ridiculously energetic she was; it was impossible for her to sit still or even have a normal conversation. Since I was the only one her age there we became friends and ended up talking a lot. She confided in me about her past struggles with severe anorexia, episodes of depression along with a suicide attempt that she never told anybody about. It was really heartbreaking stuff that this girl was going through since she was a teenager, all obvious signs of mental illness that were never treated. She came from a nice, well-off family, too, which completely underlines the fact that mental illness remains as this mystifying ailment that too many people don't know how to approach until it's suddenly a major event that turns your life upside down.

mrsleeve, you really have no fucking idea what you are talking about. There is a major difference between coping with life circumstances, and dealing with a malfunctioning brain that, without medical intervention, you can do nothing to control.

Every person with diabetes just ate to many krispy kreme donuts, I mean at least most of them did anyway. Most of them are just fatties, so they are their own problem.

I was joking. I have a masters in social work and I am state licensed in NJ and in GA as a therapist and this is the population I work with. Some other myths are what a "social worker" is. Most are not educated social workers, they just use the title and far fewer have a license. I have been in this field for 5+yrs. The myths of mental illness are deeply rooted in societies desire to perpetuate the stigma. I could go on, but if anyone has real interest I can answer some questions, or look at the DSM5 for diagnosing criteria for all mental illnesses. I am not a Dr. I don't prescribe medications, I am the person you go to so that you can talk through your issues.
