In defense of setting remakes in modern times: when the originals were made, often times they were set in a contemorary setting and so what we now view as "classic" was fairly "normal" when they were being made. While most of us are cool and think "classic" rules (e30 anyone? ;-)) the general audience, particularly the younger crowd, will ultimately relate better to something set in the present. So instead of "updating" a "classic" they're really just adjusting the stories to fit with the modern world and therefore make it more aproachable to broad spectrum of people. Keeping things in the same time period that they were originally created in is tricky because it's very easy for it to slip into parody.
