    The Audi thread

Alright guys, so I looked through and couldn't find a thread on Audi's.

I'm looking at getting a B5 S4 as a daily. Anyone here have a B5 S4 and would like to weigh in? Because it's not my only car I can stand to take my time and find the right car. Preferably black/black or Nogaro/Black. And a 6 speed.

Throw up some pictures of your rides guys.

My mom used to have an 03 A6. Thing was the most comfortable and spacious car I've been in.

old audis are the literally the worst used cars money can buy, especially if the PO didn't make it rain at his local repair shop for regular yearly maintenance. just google "S4 auxiliary water pump DIY" and cringe at that shit.

on a different note, if the one you buy needs a right upper rear control arm i've got a new-in-box one for cheap :D

            I've heard B5 S4's are kind of a nightmare...

My dad has a B6 S4... it's been pretty solid for him. Only thing he's had to replace was a window motor.

I love mine, but I have only owned it for 6 months and I have worked on it a lot.

Luckily I have a Saab and Miata to drive when the S4 breaks. Its currently down while I wait for a new throttle body boot. Before that it was a broken flex pipe on the stock downpipes. Been through 2 maf sensors, O2 sensor, 2 sets of plugs (my fault though because I run copper).

Now, I really do enjoy working on it. If you are competent it is no worse than any other car.

And now I'm running catless downpipes and 19psi, its a damn fast and very comfortable DD. But as soon as we have a house with a garage, it will no longer be a DD.

If you want to fix at least one thing every month, then buy the S4. For me, I have ALWAYS wanted a b5 s4, so I am happy to overlook the downsides. Even with its constant mememe attitude, its just a damn awesome car with an amazing engine.

                    Here's my thread on it.

Sitting at home broken, but it should be back on DD status tomorrow for another 3 weeks at least.

Forgot to mention my egt sensors took a crap too, but I have Eurodyne and a wideband to monitor, so I just coded them out. Otherwise they are $500 a piece.

Also, my car was a prime example. All maintenance records and I have still spent hundreds on it just keeping it up to spec.

If you don't have extra income, don't buy one.

Or do, because how can you resist it?

an 80's gt quattro is the audi i would own.

VW tech here, we get the occasionally Audi in the shop once in a while, and all the techs including myself usually avoid it until they push it on one of us by force, they are awful cars. Do I personally hate them? No, I just would never want to own one. Anyone I know who asks me about one for them to buy, I always push them towards another brand, b/c in the end I'll be the one working on it

however there is one exception to my rule

I owned a B5 A4, paid like $2k-$2,500 for it no records, no anything, it was traded in to the local audi dealership and I bought it for what they got it for with a tank of gas tossed in. Drove it around for like 3 years without spending almost anything on it. Siezed an alternator bearing which destroyed the belt and least to some significant wire harness destruction. Would I buy that car again? Hell yes, wasn't the fastest in the world but I love Audi interiors and it had a decent feel going down the road.

I have also owned a B7 S4, that was a completely different animal. Hell of a lot of fun, beautiful sprint blue with black leather and carbon interior. Great car usually. I put somewhere in the range of 80-100k on it over a 4 year period. By the end the timing guides were on their last leg and I didn't have the space at my new house to do the work over a winter. I really never had much problems with that car until the guides started to go and it started to mis fire. Keep in mind that isn't a small repair, this is pull the engine (chains are on the back of those engines) replace the whole setup, I think parts alone were on the range of $2,500-$4,000 depending on if the chains are in spec etc. Beyond that I didn't much issue, had 1 coil pack go bad, popped off a serpentine belt there too and dumped oil like crazy from the front seal. Would I buy an S4 again? Yes probably still one of my favorite cars I have owned or driven, I would prefer to do it with records and a warranty if I did though.

My opinion, B5 S4 is so sexy but can be very scary. Without good records and hopefully new turbo's I don't know that I could get my self to sign up for what they are still selling for.

Also keep in mind that the average maintenance isn't always the easiest either. Pull the front bumper and put the car in service position to change the serpentine belt, what the hell.
