I had a B5 S4 for a couple years a while back and enjoyed it greatly. It ran and drove excellent, but maintaining that thing was exhausting. I think in the 2.5 years I owned it I replaced all the control arms, both front axles, the shifter, removed the electric coolant pump, brakes all the way around, timing belt, water pump, all the coil packs, and a whole bunch of other things. Would I get another one? Probably. I really enjoyed that car. I seriously want a Nogaro Blue S4 Avant... mmmm....

It was pretty quick too w/ the 6 speed and an APR tune. To my knowledge it's still on the road with 200k miles on the original turbos.

        Here's my Audi thread -
01 B5 Avant 1.8T manual here. Looked long and hard and found a 1.8 with sport cloth seats, manual, no sunroof. Everything but sport suspension, but we have snow and crappy roads.

Hard to get it stuck. With good tires it's fantastic in snow. Amazing on glare ice. Fun to drive, a little nose-heavy. Not near as much room inside as my Volvo 850T wagon and they weigh the same.

130,000 mi, a little unknown sludge from PO, maybe a missed oil change, then this…. No warning, no lights. Spun rod bearings, broken rod through the block and pan. Full of nice new synthetic oil, checked every fuel stop. Pressure good, everything good…BOOM!

I replaced it myself with a good used engine, and everything else is new - oil pump & chain, pickup tube, oil pressure lines, gaskets, tensioners, belts, pumps, sensors, hoses, vac lines, emissions, clutch, flywheel, rebuilt the turbo……

The engine is simple, the packaging and plumbing and electrical and everything else is stuffed in there so tight it's frustrating. The most complicated thing I have taken apart and gotten back together right.

The problem with that engine was a pan that didn't fit the crossmember, so it only held 3.7 qts full up. Let's say it's been a while since you checked and you're a 1/2 qt down. Now you have 3 qts of oil in your engine. A high heat turbo engine with an water-to-oil oil cooler, a turbo squeezed in there, and long factory service intervals that let the oil start to bake.

Now I have a giant filter so I have an extra half qt, I check it religiously, it is very specific VW / Audi - approved high end synthetic, I have a brand new oil system and a polished pan, and I will change it at 3000 mi.

Nice car……now I don't trust it. I drive it like an old man….listening….

You're not alone. My mate took the stereo out of his Quattro so he can listen to to break down.

Had 2 B5 S4s, 02 sedan and 01.5 avant. Both 6 spd, both imola yellow.

Both when they were young sub 50k mile cars. 3-5 yr old sedan, 5-7 yrs old (miles 36-50k) on the avant.

The guy who bought my avant had 2 separate ppi's done on it. 3zero3 in Denver said after looking it over, "this is one of the cleanest most well maintained S4s we've seen in for a ppi. It only needs $1500 in work."

The sadistic side of me still misses the avant.

Everything I've heard about A/S4s from people who have had or work on them is bad aside from the driving experience. Anyway, they're good looking cars, with comfortable interiors and good driving dynamics, but they seem to be lacking in quality. Interior parts were missing/peeling/falling off in most of the ones I parked back when I was a Valet, and they almost always had a warning light or two on. I worked on an A4 V6 for a side job, once. And it was a clusterfuck, what should have been a routine AC compressor job took way longer than I expected it to.

Girlfriends mom had an S4 for a while.
Didn't really care for the car itself but that motor sounded fantastic.

I love b5 s4 avants but have never been able to pull the trigger on one due to all the bullshit that comes along with them. I have my eye out for an s4 avant with a blown motor so I can do a turbo vr6 swap which would make maintenance soo much easier
