Yes, I agree, it's very good. They upped it to 8% when they did away with pensions/retirement pay. I'm cool with that as I've always thought retirement should be the responsibility of the employee and not the company. Burden the company with too many pensions and they won't be able to survive... everyone loses.

Match is golden, we have people at my office that don't contribute at all, giving up the 4% match every year. My place does put 2-4% in depending on your years of service which certainly won't be enough to get those people by in the long run.

I am trying to buy in a little heavier right now than normal. I usually buy heavier when everyone else is selling and sell when everyone else is buying, tends to work over the past decade or so. This month though was bound to happen a few years up 20% or more and you have to have some bad times sprinkled in where I lose more in my 401k in a month than over half the country makes in a year. Just have to look out to the 2037-2042 range where I will actually retire.

What ive always been told and something not enough people follow is:

The Stock market is not the Economy.

Too many people focusing on what the DOW is doing while ignoring other areas.

I have just been paying my mortgage off as fast as I can. I have a pension, and retirement savings investments, but by and large my home value has gone up way more than anything else.
Tax Assessed value has gone up 600k in 10 years. Market value, 800k.

                Rediculous housing market here.

Yeah my place was just assessed $582k and I pay $9800 a year. I would love $5500, and for my area, my taxes are considered reasonable…there are people a couple towns over paying $12k for the same assessed value.

I love the 6% match at my company. I've actually contributed beyond the 6% match to put something around 15% in for the last couple years. I'll be buying a few ETFs when I feel we've settled at or around the bottom, just not ready to jump in quite yet.

Yep, I am upping mine this year as well to 12%. Though my current company only does up to 3% match, they do pick up the medical.

As far back as I can remember, I have always tried to max the employer matching, it's free money. And yet, at my wife's company, most of her employees won't do it.

I never understood that thinking, even if you make 30k a year and your company matches 5%, you're only taking 1500 a year off your pre tax income. And being pretax it makes even less of an effect on your take home..

Course, basic math sometimes confuses the unwashed masses.

I was thinking the same. Local real estate taxes here for a $250,000 home is about $5000...
