My grandfather used to be a Wayne Dalton installer and installed one on my dad's house about 15 years ago. Still works great!Comment

If you get a minute, please check out this video on the LM 8500:
How do you guys feel about the host's comments on getting the door balanced / adjusted or some form of optimization prior to installing the LM? This kinda takes away from the DIY aspect of the 8500, which offsets the higher purchase price...I Timothy 2:1-2Comment

Balancing/leveling a garage door is not hard, just takes some time to get it right. Lots of info on the web about it.
I just did my door actually. Having never done it before, I got it working properly in 2 hours or so, and that included fixing a cable that came off the pulley and accidentally letting all the spring tension out at one point (oops).Comment

Good to know, Andrew. Seemed like something that I would shoot myself in the foot fairly quickly.Balancing/leveling a garage door is not hard, just takes some time to get it right. Lots of info on the web about it.

Your door does have to be able to open and close smoothley. This helps when you have smaller sections. Such as a 8' vs 7'. And longer radius track like 15" vs 12". The doors are really simple to ballence. Just do quarter turns when winding up the springs and repeat on the other side. Go slow and make sure to not let go. I've seen people get hurt when the spring gets away from them. This normally occurres while rushing. 8500 is cool, not worth it in my opinion. But if you are hell bent on not having a motor hang above your work space it's a great option.@doorman @E30_World

You nailed it. I was talking with doorman about this - along with lower cost, this is the reason for DIYs. The more you know...

The garage door is a normal, modern roll-up, but for some unknown reason this garage never had an opener.
If I had the option to simply replace an existing traditional overhead, I would do that in a heartbeat. But in my case the 8500 will save money on the install because I don't think I could do a regular GDO as easily or efficiently as the jack-shaft-mount. Hope this makes sense.I Timothy 2:1-2Comment

Awesome, you'll be happy with it. The 8500 is also able to be hooked up to your iPhone. So that's pretty coolYou nailed it. I was talking with doorman about this - along with lower cost, this is the reason for DIYs. The more you know...
