Here's the Crozet tunnel. Dates back before the Civil war IIRC. They're supposed to be making it into a biking trail.

Problem around here is stuff is never really "abandoned". The government gets a hold of it and makes it illegal to go into. The first sanitarium I posted has been boarded up and fenced in and is patrolled now. :/

The tunnel is owned by Nelson county, but sits alongside the current rail line and they keep an eye on it now. Almost got caught up there, but luckily made off into the woods before the cops patrolling caught on.

I have so much to read now haha. That tunnel would be an awesome bike trail. How long is that tunnel? I love tunnels. I have to visit, the east coast now.

Tunnel is about 1 mile long IIRC. There is a wall halfway through with a pipe in it. Have to crawl through it to go the entire length.

My doors are open if you come out here. We can get arrested for trespassing together! ;)

Seriously I've thought of writing the local governing bodies for permission to photo-document the places for reasons of historical value.

Google: Seely Castle Asheville NC if you like spooky shit. Local tale is that it is home to numerous human sacrifices by a surprisingly large group of wealthy Satanists. I read an article yesterday where a converted Satanists claimed to have skinned an infant alive inside the castle then took the remains home and put it down the disposal. There were several other extremely disturbing accounts from converted Satanists about the kinds of things that happen there.

That would be a blast, that and I would love to see the east coast from a locals point of view, I'm not a fan of tourist locations, I want to see the good stuff.

I would be interested to know if they would let you go in and photograph. I'm a big fan of old photo graphs compared to new photographs. Someone needs to take the photos.

I hate that people feel the need to go in and vandalize places, thats what makes the government feel like they need to close it off.

Yeah, that's total bullshit. I lived in Asheville for almost 20 years and people keep the tale going just to keep things interesting. A Christian sect who believed in speaking in tongues and whatnot owned the place and were very private, and that's what spawned the rumor.
