    Careers Thread

With the number of career-related questions that come up around R3v, thought it may be good to start a separate thread to discuss work stuff. I figure there’s a good range of experience and industries represented here, who can contribute what they know to the community.

Or this goes nowhere and it stays in the Nonsense thread. Whatever y’all want ;)

    Good thread idea!

I spent the first part of my working years in hospitality as a bartender, waiter and manager at several different restaurants. That led to a job doing installations, logistics and support for a point-of-sale outfit where I was employee #2.

I got tired of the 24/7 on-call life, so I left to go work at a healthcare software development shop where I was employee #5, and where I stayed for 12+ years. While there I served as a support specialist, a data analyst, an implementation coordinator and most recently a business analyst. After staying through at least one too many M&As (and subsequently having to deal with one too many Lumberghs) I decided to seek employment elsewhere.

For the past 18 months I've been working for the healthcare division of a global company on a software development team comprised of ETL devs, app devs and QAs. I was hired as a Senior Data Quality Analyst; I am the team's Senior Project Manager as of a couple of months ago.

            Alrighty...

I started as an intern at a web development shop back in the late '90s. Was an English major, but always had a business bent. Worked in online marketing, development, sales, and business strategy. Was working at a startup when the dot-com crash hit. I'd started b-school by that point, needing more of a hard skill than my undergrad degree, so I studied corporate finance.

After b-school, I worked at the studios here in LA as a financial analyst, and passed the CPA exam. Fed up with big corporate life, I moved over to higher ed and haven't looked back.

The more I learn, the more I learn I have a lot to learn. :)

However, I'm interested in helping out where I can. Fire away!

It's cool to see the diversity we have here. I'm currently starting year 4 of 5 in a biochemistry PhD program. I work with microbes from hot springs looking for novel thermostable enzymes for lignocellulose degradation. Hoping to end up in Seattle at a biotech company, anything research related would be great.
