pretty much. i dont know anyone that has gotten stuck 'peeling potatoes' on a ship. these days they have culinary people do that. eg- cooks. i also don't know anyone that has been screwed over by the Navy, or any branch of the military. the people that do usually did something stupid and retarded to get themselves screwed over.


dont worry, im not leaving e30's either. im giving my current one to my step-brother, then buying a decent one when i have a chance so i can still do track days (cuz im keeping my seats, rollbar, and all my other mods), then maybe a honda for daily driving.

can you read? im signing up monday. i know many people in the Navy, and it hasn't screwed ANY of them over.

I promise I know WAY more about the Navy than you. I have been there, done that. (ex)SK3/SS Fisher is whom you are addressing.

And yes, I can read just fine. You do not seem to be able to take a joke though. You might want to work on that...it really helps build camaraderie.

As far as the Navy screwing over anyone, who the hell said anything about that? Fuckups will fuckup no matter where they are. I did just fine in my time in the Navy. As far as the whole "see the world" thing, the vast majority of people in the military do the exact same thing they would do in civilian life, which is NOTHING. Spend all of their money drinking, chasing the opposite sex, fucking off. If you want to see the world, you can. If you want education, you can do that too. If you want to work on your car, that is available too, but the reality is that YOU still have to do it. Most don't. Since you will have the opportunity laid at your feet, use it wisely.

Most are just too damn lazy.

I feel I used my time well. I took the time to travel, meet people all over the areas that I was stationed in. Traveled by train all over Scotland, by plane all over the US. Met and got to know many different types of people...but let me tell you, most (I am talking 90% or more) just waste the opportunity.

Personally, I think the Navy is a terriffic choice for many people. It was not for me, but that isn't the point here. I am too independent, too far outside the norm of what is necessary to be part of an orginization like that.

You should expect to peel potatoes, you will definatly scrub toilets and "swab decks" among other distasteful endeavors for the first few years. Get over it. It is part of being in a team. Everyone gets the dirty work, Corpsmen are no exception, especially a junior one.

I hope you do well. I saw and learned a hell of a lot.

And just so you know, Submariners get the best food. Consider it.

thanks for the advice. i was making a serious thread, and was expecting serious answers. if any of you knew me, i am a very joking person. when i want to be serious, i am very very serious though. peeling potatoes? if so, part of the job and i'll do it. big deal. my response was to that guy who made it sound like that would be my actual job for my entire Navy career.

i have no interest whatsoever to see germany or the UK, regardless of if they are different from the US or not. they just don't interest me. if i get stationed in either location, then maybe my viewpoint will change as i learn more about them.

you also assume that if i go to Iraq i will automatically be killed. the percentage is really really low. if i get shot, i get shot. i believe in pre-destination and in the end, what happens will happen. therefore it doesn't bother me. i appreciate what both of you have said, as you are both experienced military personel. i respect that and hope i can give advice as such to a young person later in my life as well. im not going to use my time chasing women, drinking, and fucking off. that is retarded and will get you nowhere. yeah, it's fun sometimes but duty before party. i use that in my every day life as well.

thanks for the advice, i will take it all into consideration in my decision.


ps- i don't want to be on a submarine. just doesn't sound like my kind of life. good for or bad food, i dont care haha.

Let me offer one more bit...and this is a tough one.

Try like hell (and yes, it is impossible) to lose all preconcieved notion of what you will be in for. Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut sounds harsh but really is good advice. I could not do it at 17...it was tough.

Sign up for a rate that interests you, work hard, do what you are told, try and understand that those who have gone before you have already made the mistakes. Just simply do the work, and when off work, get the hell away from the base!

As far as submarines goes, if you talk to any of the "boomer" guys (SSBN boats) you will see it is easily the best duty in the Navy. 3 months at sea followed by 3 months on land. Extra pay, easier shore duty. Time flies at sea, you are so busy doing all of the stuff necessary to support life at 1200 feet under the surface of the ocean.

Most guys on Aircraft carriers see less of the sun than boomers...the submarine service really is a good life. Bird farms (aircraft carriers) often stay at sea for a year at a time, stopping rarely, with few allowed "shore leave".

Check it out before you make any permanent decisions.

Oh yeah...you also get 3 months pay in a chunk...

i'll think about it. keeping my mouth shut, i am really good at that when it comes to authority. never been arrested or in trouble really. im not 17 or 18, im 21. regardless im young and have much to learn.

as far as my rate goes, im signing up as a Corpsman. i've already made that decision for the most part. im looking out for my after military life more-so than during military life. 5 years isn't that long in the entire prospect of a lifetime. figure i might as well get the best training in the world, get into a field that i am very interested in, and have an interesting experience overall that not everybody can say they have done.

im really excited. cant wait to leave and get things started. i've been working out, running, eating differently, changing my sleep pattern. all so i can get somewhat ready for the life.

anyways, i really do appreciate the advice. i'd prefer hear stuff from people who have actually experienced it first hand than some recruiter who is just doing his job.

Ok you do not know what you are talking about. Most rates still crank. Corpsmen on my ship do not. But most of the people I have worked with have spent 6+ months cleaning dishes and cleaning the galley for the CSs. The CSs just heat up the frozen food and thats about it.

Sure hope you have everything in your contract you want. Get promoted to E3 before you go to boot in DEP or whatever its called.

I would say go green side as well! Ship life is not fun and have found very few people who enjoy it. For O Docs its pure hell. For enlisted they need HMs on ships but its not too fun. Have actually traveled less than if I would have never enlisted. Sure I have visited Greece and Palma Spain but that is about it. Hit Bahrain a bunch of times though FTL.

Either way it is what you make of it. You idea that you are doing it to go to college is funny. That is what 90% of the people say who get in. Only a few ever actually do it esp if you are signing up for six years or so which many do now. There are plenty of opporunities though. But if it were me I would work and go into debt and give the FAFSA a reach around and go to school.

Most of all I hope you are going because you want to serve your country and support what the military is doing.

I've actually considered joining various military forces many times, mainly as a gateway to the intelligence world, but it seems it's not my thing. I've know quite a few people who have been through the armed forces and for what it's worth the Navy guys always seem the happiest. Go figure. I'm sure it will be a lot of work but like you say it's an awesome experience. Good luck man!

Its not really a great foot in the door for NSA, CIA or other top notch agencies. They would laugh at you. Well for the navy that is. Either way they only really hire top notch junior officers who get out or retirees to be senior analysts.
It does however open lots of doors to work for big contractors SIAC, Booz Allen etc..

i do want to serve my country +1, and definitely support the military. you guys are real life hero's.. i'm not signing for 6 years either. i also want to go 'green side'. its near home for me so on weekends i could come back and see friends if duties permit. school is of huge importance to me. yeah, maybe not a lot of people do go to school, but i will.

anyways, like i said, i havent signed yet. i do it tommorow and will get everything in my contract that i want hopefully.
