I am sorry for your loss, but that is why I will and haven't done anything other than drinking.

Blunt there are lots of people that have done hard drugs that never smoked weed regularly or even at all. This whole gateway drug thing is a cop out imo.. It not like when you smoke weed, your brain all the sudden decides its time to do harder and harder drugs....

I'm probably an exception to the norm, probably because of where I live. But I smoke weed just about everyday. I have a at least a 3.5 all the way through college, I'm becoming a certified commercial pilot, I don't have any desire to do harder drugs, lots of my friends smoke all the time and are perfectly normal productive people... FFS one of them is a Pre Med with honors and is holding down a 3.98 gpa... People need to suck it the fuck up and take responsibility for their choices...and stop blaming it on weed.

There was a documentary a couple years ago about the black-tar heroin problem amongst portland's homeless. Might have been a Oregon PBS piece, dont remember. Very depressing.

There was one about meth too. It's pretty sad. 94% of those who become addicted to meth never kick it. Most of it's over on the East side of the river (thank god I live in NW).

i used to be into drugs a bit, but its something that i grew out of. something that i figured out in that time is its never the drugs fault, its just there. no one forces you to do it. it that persons choice. blaming the drug of area you live in for deaths is a cop out also. more like lack of will power.

Do you honestly think that without drugs people would have respect for eachother?

Seriously man if you jsut read a little bit of the scientific literature on marijuana, or *gasp* maybe even tried it yourself, your opinion would change. I agree that hard drugs like meth, heroin, and coke are bad things to get into and ruin peoples lives but not all drugs are the same and marijuana is definately not the same.

I love portland, and portland is home. drugs that make you depend on them suck too. so lets not eff portland, but drugs itself. I know you didn't mean the city itself coldaccord, sorry for your loss. I have a friend that was on meth, but now he's clean of it and replaced it with alcohol(not really though), I guess that's a plus right.

Flying is something I take extremely seriously. I would never in my life dream of flying an airplane under the influence of anything, including cold meds. My life or other peoples lives is not something I gamble with especially at 5,000 ft. Further more I wasn't trying to claim drugs or even weed is a "good" thing, I merely was trying to say that people make the free choice to do drugs, regardless of what drug it is, and it's not fair to blame weed as the end all be all reason for harder drug use.

Now back of topic. I'm sorry your friend died of drug abuse here in Portland. It's never a pleasant thing when some one close to you dies, and I offer my condolences.

yeah, or we should create a drug with no sideaffects or death, that makes us happy and then can call it soma and have the government drop it on us to end riots....

Damn...... I dont know if its Heroin that your buddy died from, cuz the PNW is hands down infersted with crystal meth. 80% of the crime is committed by meth users having to do with their habit. Either way Im so sorry. Ive been around the block more than a few times and can tell you what an absolute war it is to get clean. Meth is EVERYWHERE down here. ANd they start at the youngest ages. My goddaughters first started that shit when they were 14 and ALL their friends are into it. I wonder where theyll be in 10 years! Anyways Im sorry for your loss.

OP, sorry to hear. I buried a beautiful cousin a few months back due to drugs. She could of had the world by the tail. She started with weed, got around the wrong people and well, you know the rest.

Mot, if you take flying seriously then you wouldn't smoke weed. <- Yeah, thats a period.

what I do in my free time away from my flying lessons has no bearing on my seriousness of my career choice.

If i chose to knock back a couple of drinks in the evening mean I was any less serious about flying airplanes?

geezus people It's not like I smoke a bunch of pot and go flying. Ive said over and over I would never even consider flying under the influence of anything. ANYTHING

                                Again back on topic:

I'm really sorry you lost a close friend to drug abuse. I lost a friend to drunk driving, different but very similar..
