For those reading these forums who may not know much about firearms and/or laws, in the US you cannot leagally own a fully automatic firearm unless you have a special license (background checks, police department approval/notification) and have about $3000 or more to buy the gun. Everyone that buys a gun fills out a form that asks various quesions about drug use, mental health treatment, etc., and then there is a background check by phone. A felon can't "legally" own a gun, nor someone who has had certain types of mental health problems or who has been convicted of domestic violence. Some states (California, New Jersey, Maryland) and cities have very strict laws (New York, Washington DC) but crime is still high in these areas for some reason. The guns that are relatively easy to get that are semi-automatic (shoots one time/trigger pull) and that are relatively affordable are AK (non-automatic), AR-15 (non-automatic), .22 caliber rifles, etc. All of these guns cost about $200 to $900. Most crimes are commited with pistols, not rifles. Why own a semi-automatic gun? If you hunt it is quicker to shoot, if you target shoot you don't have to reload and change positions with each shot. What makes a rifle an "assault rifle"? A pistol grip, bayonet lug, flash suppressor and the gun must be semi-automatic. I live in an area where gun ownership is a way of life. There are very, very few people who are shot and few robberies. Ultimately owning a gun is a personal choice like any other choice. If you don't own a gun, try not to judge the millions of responsible gun owners by what a politician with an agenda has to say, or by watching the actions of criminals on the evening news.Leave a comment:

I think it's because most American's (maybe even most people in general) feel the need to be their own, and their family's protector. And a gun may seem like the most practical matter of protection.Leave a comment:

OK, don't you look smart now? - How about you roll back to pg. 3 where I asked you a direct question instead of providing attacks without any rebuttal?
You want to know a good reason not to commit crime in NZ? Because you are a island country with no place to run once pulling a job. Duh. I bet if we took a look, we would see less major crime in Hawaii too, for the exact same reason.
Somewhere there's a statistic that the U.S. was like 15% of the world's population, but we consume 2/3 of all illicit drugs produced. For that reason alone the central East side of WA is a support community for drugs to Seattle, and can be a violent place to live if you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Additionally, this is a USA based thread letting us AMERICANS know that we may be on the lookout as to the status of this legislative document. It won't effect you, so just bask in the non-violent society you enjoy and look down your nose at us gun owners, or at least participate instead of acting a fool.
If China wanted a source for sheep and kiwi's - they would invade & own your country faster than it takes to clean up New Orleans from Fat Tuesday.
Additionally, some of the best times I've ever had as a kid was out shooting with Dad. Any kid in any country would probably say the same, too bad you had to miss out on that.
Every last gun I own has a purpose, and some of that involves hunting for food - what's wrong with that?
We have plenty of guns over here however they are mostly for hunting. Gun control is pretty strict and special permits are needed for handguns and assult weapons. What I meant by my earlier statement was that despite that we have guns in this country police still don't feel the need to carry, (they are only just trialling a couple of tasers now). I doubt most of the petty crims who kill someone do becuase they can run to mexico.
I have been hunting heaps before, yeah its kinda cool and blowing the shit out of something with an AK would be fucking fun but at the same time I feel much happier knowing people can't pop into town and buy an AK. I can also understand how people would like to collect guns as a hobby and I have no problem with that either. I'd like to think that most gun owners on this site are responsible with their weapons taking every precaution feasable.
If china wanted to invade us theres pretty much nothing we could do even if we were fully armed. Our Air-force doesn't even have a strike wing anymore and I don't really have a problem that. We'll just go crawling to Aus, UK and you guys for help.
However I can't understand (as a non american) your obsession and gun culture.. Its not so much the recreation side of things but the self-protection and patriotic-ness of them. Comments like the one above (2 posts up) I quoted really get me. Is a gun in every home really the answer? The way I see it if a crook knows theres gonna be a gun hes probably gonna get a vest and bring a gun too. Is that really gonna help anything, chances of someone getting shot are getting pretty high. (IMHO)
I also believe that a government should be afraid of its people but again is everyone buying an AK the answer to that?
Lastly, ok so I'm a non- American and this thread is really for you guys. But it is an international (like it or not) forum and your always gonna get people like me sticking their nose in and voicing opinion.
Apologies if thats drivel, I know i want to say just don't know how to say it.Leave a comment:

As I said before, criminals will own guns ban or no ban, so it's better they know there is a gun in every house, that'll make them think twice.Leave a comment:

"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... What country before ever existed a century and half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
Thomas Jefferson.

On that note the general population will give up right after right for a presumed sense of security. FoolsLeave a comment:

People forget that civilians owning guns was so the Government doesn't take total control. Yet that is exactly what is going on.Leave a comment:

look, some of you people need to get off the anti-liberal/democrap shit, as you can see, alot of democrats support the same things that you do, I'm sure you(conservative) do not agree with everything that the republicans support.
And to the quoted postread my earlier post, apples and oranges.
I'm outta this shitty match of cornhole...peace out and the right to bear arms is a must.Leave a comment:

....its like buying and f450 truck to tow a 400lbs jet ski, when an e30 would do fine, overkill.
By that logic, why buy a BMW, when a Chevy Aveo will do?
Why have a car that can do 100+, when a car that can go 80 will already break every speed limit on the books?Leave a comment:

I'm a democrat. I support the second ammendment. You guys can keep your assult weapons.Leave a comment:

I don't like the Assault weapons ban, however I live with it fine. I am a Democrat, who also is former Army, and likes guns. The way I look at it, I have a class A LTC Concealed, and high cap ANYTHING, which is very difficult to get in Mass. unless you know the police well. If I really needed to shoot at someone, I don't need 30 rounds to do it, etc. Army= one shot one kill, hence why in my opinion the average citizen does not need an assault weapon of any type....its like buying and f450 truck to tow a 400lbs jet ski, when an e30 would do fine, overkill.Leave a comment:
