My favorite pop ice (li hing mui flavor) has a big warning on the back that it contains something known to cause cancer in lab rats :P

Its still the bomb, I'll probably get skin cancer before ice cream cancer anyway.

Don't forget about lottery and cigarettes. That's the main cash cow for most gas stations. Overall gas, stations make a substantial amount of money at the end of the day even though their profit is pennies on the dollar. A buddy of mine that works in the refinary says that they profit about $3 for every barrel of oil that they process (give or take depending on the price of oil). And even though it does not seem like a lot of money, in the grand scale of things the refinary makes a small fortune. They don't make any money off of the higher gas prices but they surely get theirs.

Are you serious? I mean, this is common practice in all business. Take a look at the interest rate on your checking account, car loan, mortage, credit cards....I could go on.

And the last I looked, my sales tax locally was 8.85%....so you buy a dollars' worth of something...it's 9 cents.

Where are you hiding that you never noticed this before? Also, the gas thing isn't always .9 cents, you just never looked.

Are you for real? I'm not one to judge, but you bring up so many things that you find profound, but to the rest of us are commonplace - it's just odd how many times you do this. I still think you were held back in elementary school.

When you are selling in such large quantities any little bit extra you can get without someone thinking about it can turn into a lot for you.
Yeah. But if the price was simply $3.06 I would still get the gas. Its just that 9/10 is such a wierd fraction to tack on the back of the price. Nothing else in this world is priced that way. Not even stock trading. And they only do things on the 1/8 fractions because when the whole stock market thing started, Mexican currency was made of real silver and if you broke a coin in half, quarters, or eighths it would have its corrosponding value. So they decided to base the pricing system on that standard.

Does the industry think that they are fooling us by making the price 1/10 of a penny cheaper so that we will think that its 1 cent less? I mean if you rounded the price up to an even number, we are still going to pay it regardless of how much we hate the price.

everyone knows that, yet we dont always think about it when making purchases. not like it matters anyway. i hardly check the price when pumping anyway. i cant afford not to buy it.

the 9/10 comes from the various taxes that are placed on gas by the state and the fed... it doesnt have anything to do with the gas company fooling you...
