I am a Republican, and I resent what that means now. People think that means I'm a George W Bush humping , Gay bashing, Jesus praising redneck. Republicans used to be pretty progressive, you might even say... liberal. The EPA and our diplomatic relationship with China were both created by.... RICHARD NIXON. George Bush #1 believed in international cooperation and got the entire Gulf war paid for by other countries. I dont like how far right this admin has gone, but I'm still not afraid to call myself a republican and conservative. I hope we will move back toward the center soon though. Maybe through Giuliani? Who knows

Its a little known fact but conservative republicans are the ones that capitalize off of the free handouts. They were the ones that started the welfare system and they were the ones who suggested that we be kinder and gentler.. i.e. having feelings.

But all in all our elected officials spend time keeping the rest of the american public divided and confused. When I look at both parties argue over something like wefare reform, its almost evident that they are on the same side. Democrats are always seemingly fighting for social programs against the republicans while knowing that these programs actually help republicans get richer. They own most of the businesses and corporations that are used by the government for supplying goods and services too the poor.

I am definately more of the conservative slant- not hardcore by any means though. If I had to put a label on my political ideology, I would say that fiscally I am a conservative: keep the government out of my wallet and out of my life and much as possible. On social issues, I am more moderate. I have no issue with gay people getting married or a woman having a right to choose. What I do mind is that when I mention that I am a conservative/republican, some people automatically lump me into the bible thumping, gun toting, NASCAR lovin' crowd. For the record, I consider myself spiritual but not religous (only attend services 2 or 3 times a year) and although I don't own a gun of my own, I think responsible people should be able to own firearms. As for NASCAR.....phuck NASCAR (give me F1!!!).

When observing both sides of the political arena, it seems that only the extreme devotees from each camp seem to be most vocal during an election season....hello swift boat crews & hippie retreads from the 60s. I really don't believe either of these factions represent the majority of America. I believe the vast majority of people are more towards the middle and align themselves with where I stand (fiscally conservative, socially moderate). What is unfortunate is that these extreme voices from each side seem to be the ones who make the greatest contributions to their respective campaign efforts - the folks in the middle are the silent majority and are stuck with having to gravitate to one extreme or the other (while holding their nose) as they go to the ballot box on election day.

Which brings me to another point (sorry, but I'm a bit passionate about this stuff). Why is it that only 1/3 to 1/2 of the registered voters actually get off their ass and cast their vote? Do the people of this country really lack that much concern or interest in who is going to be in charge of the most powerful country in the world? Like that get the vote out slogan: "your vote is your voice - be heard." I like to say: "if you didn't vote in the last election, you can't bitch about it now....you waived that right by not getting to the polls."
