Whatever laptop you get, go with a company that will come to YOU when it breaks.
Dell laptop quality is pretty much low end, however they will at least replace every part of it to keep it running. Once you get through the indian support and convince them to send the part out.
To be honest the only company I can recommend is Lenovo. US based call center, laptops that are BUILT to withstand business users who are tough on them, and one of the only companies that will send you parts no matter what they are. I had a mobo go out on one of our notebooks, Lenovo just sent me the board, no questions, they even do that for home customers, and they overnighted it to me!. They will of course also send you a tech if you want and have that support package.
Toshiba avoid at all costs, horrid support, horrid company in general, and they are mainly building PC's on a mindset that cramming the latest technology without really testing it is the best thing to do.
Apple, I used to love Apple, but I will never in my life buy another one. In terms of support, they are the worst company I have ever dealt with.
Logic board failures on my G3 Ibook X 3, apple support just kept replacing them until one day, sorry we no longer support it. Bad design and they just told me to go to hell.
After that I bought a G4 Powerbook, month later the DVDRW Drive went out, okay not a problem, called apple..."BRING IT TO AN APPLE STORE"..but its clicking, no matter, they insist an Apple Genius take a look at it. After bringing it to them, they insisted a software problem was causing the drive to click (grinds now too!). Flabergasted I went to another apple store, because the first one logged it, nobody else could do anything until i reformatted the machine...Which I could not because the damn drive was not working. They even booted it off a firewire drive, still clicked, but nope, its still a software problem on my drive. 3 months of dealing with Apple trying to get a replacement, I said fuckit and bought my own drive, ripped it apart, replaced it, and imagine that, works fine.
Next to that we have had countless issues with Macbooks, and Macbook Pro's at my office, several users have them, and everything from random lockups, screen inverters buzzing like a bugzapper, and Apple Support that only says please waste time and bring it down, so we can tell you its not our problem.
That, coupled with the even more specialized hardware, no thanks. I used to love apple, but the second they went Intel I left the camp.
Go Lenovo, Its the only way to go for a quality notebook these days (that is fairly well priced)

Just a few interesting facts about dell:
They make the Latitude line. Their quality is awesome. You just choose business instead of home & home office. Magnesium chassis, awesome keyboards (still not as nice as the thinkpad but close) and they come with 3 year warranties. The catch is the Latitudes cost $900 starting.
Their inspirons, the home line, are crap. They are built poorly because they need to get the costs down so they can push $600 models.
Also Dell is getting rid of the Injun tech support. I have yet to get one. I havent actually had to have anything fixed on my laptop, just had questions about options, but always got americans.Im now E30less.

Now I remember why I hate dell so much.. They have dumbass indians on the tech support line. I do not mind the language/accent barrier so much as I cannot stand the fact that these people on the other end of the line are just completely STUPID. I guess all of their cheap labor consists of people who didn't get out of the 3rd grade.
I had a laptop where the built-in wireless card wasn't working and I am tech savy enough to go through the device manager and fix it. To make a long story short, the PC was not detecting it at all. I figured that the card was missing and they might have mistakenly omitted it because it didn't show up on the screen at all. So after going through the lengthy troubleshooting process with 2 different dumbasses, they had me download and install the driver. After that didn't resolve the problem they gave me instructions on how to open up the laptop reseat the wireless card. So per their instructions, I opened up the laptop and behold- an empty slot where the card was supposed to go! I said, "Hey! There is no wireless card in here!" and that jackass had the nerve to ask me, "Well where did the card go? What did you do with it?"
I told the guy, "Nevermind. I will be sending it back. Thanks for your help."
