308 is plenty for Elk inside 400 yards. 338 Federal is another good option, for about the same distance.
Still the Win Mags 300/338 are great as are Weatheby's in a plethora of calibers. Many guys are killing elk all the time with a 270.
If you want something Light and fast though you will have to be very careful with shot placement for elk is a 264winmag. Its just a light projectile is all and on a heavy bodied elk well, you get the idea but it will get there fast.........................Last edited by mrsleeve; 02-09-2013, 07:10 PM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

OK, so I am not crazy! I had lots of people lead me away from 308 for big game stuff, hmmm
Yeah the 264 would be perfect for a through shot in the lungs! have to make sure wouldn't miss though!
I am trying to get into long range and something for hunting and keep 1 rifle. So something in the middle of tactical and hunting and I have held the fcp-sr and felt like that was a good compromise. I am not concerned to much with a heavier gun as we wont be walking to far, and if so I will just man up and not be a bitch about itYour signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Well that TRG is 9 Lbs bare rifle.
If it were me for the similar money ( a couple hundred more) to the cheaper savages I would be looking a TikKa T3 in a what ever cailber you want. Or even a nice used Sako 75 or if you can find one a Sako M995 aka the TRG/s (S is for sport stock) for abotu 3-400 more in the 1100 range.
Much MUCH better quality form the Finns with the Sako/Tikka stuff than Savage. Now Savage has come a long way in the last 10 years and have great trigger, but the bolts just have a lot of wiggle in them. The Tikkas are a bit above the most Rem700 and Sav 110's hands down IMO.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

Yeah the M995/TRG-s is a 85% of the TRG41 The main differance other than the traditional sporting synthetic stock the adjustable trigger and the safety in the trigger guard Al La the TRG. is the action is open over the top, not closed over like the TRG. Other wise they still have the same 3 lug bolt and 60* lever throw and the rest is prety much the same. Just that Sako only made the M995 for a few years so they are getting harder to find, and the sell for about grand give or take a couple hundered and came in lots of calibers. Just remember that with a M995 they all are the LONG action
Yeah the mags are not cheap, but there are 3 coming with mine ;) 2 NIW stillLast edited by mrsleeve; 02-10-2013, 06:46 PM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

I think I'm just overly paranoid as I don't necessarily have a ton of faith in the federal legislation passing, but my great state of progressive would-be do gooders don't instill my confidence. House file 241 and the like are looming above MNerds right now. By next month I may be moving...

Oh I know, I've been paying close attention to the local house ne'er-do-wells. I believe there were 6 proposals presented. They held public safety hearings last week and I was at a couple of them. As per usual, they presented an argument completely free of facts based entirely on emotion, hiding behind pictures of dead children, and so-called "common sense" legislation. There were a few good speakers on the opposition that presented valid and strong arguments, but alas I feel like they fell on deaf ears. We should know more when they vote next month. I'm just afraid MN, like NY, will try to cram something through without the time to think about the repercussions a poorly executed bill may have.

In all seriousness though, she's been wanting to learn to shoot for some time. When we lived in NY we would shoot all the time, but now we can only go to an indoor range. But wanted to get something shed be comfortable with, and the perfect gun for her to grow into my SR9C so I can buy a Sig 229!
Little more than the Walther but the fit and finish/feel is way better, IMO. Plus Rugers are always pretty solid guns.
