Blunt, have you thought about just changing filters instead of oil?

I know people who have used those mail-in sample things, and they are pretty accurate and informative. The only drawbacks are that you have to wait a few weeks for them to get the results back, and you have to be VERY honest and specific about what you do with your car for the info to be of any real use.

It sounds like it would be cheaper for you to rebuild your engine every couple years than to keep throwing away good oil....

That's what the FS section is for

Used oil has gotta be at least 2 bucks a quart.

            FS used oil:

Used one track day, never reved over 3500, barely reached operating temp. Free used filter with every purchase over 6 qts. Great wholesome products made in god's country.

I am considering buying oil by drum. I was quoted $709.68 by local NAPA dealer for 5w-30 which isn't that much of deal price wise but I just love the convienience of having 220 quarts of oil at my disposal. I change my oil every 2500 and rarely push it to the full 3000 simply because I do a lot of short trip driving and the oil sucks up a lot of dirt and moisture before it can be burned off through extended periods of highway driving. My mechanic told me a long time ago that under most conditions- even racing, the oil will easily go the better part of 7500 miles without breaking down. But its the dirt and moisture that you are removing by changing the oil much sooner.

Seeing that this is in Off Topic category, we can't all go under the assumption that everyone is running an S52 in their E30.

What's the weather like, where you live? It's hot as shit here in Southern California where temperatures hit 105 degrees fahreinheit on the LA freeways in traffic on a hot day, so I use 20W-50 in my M20. I know S14 owners in the area that use factory BMW 60 weight (I believe it's 0W-60).

Living in Syracuse and/or Bridgewater, where your actual high temperature was 73 degrees fahreinheit yesterday (weather.com), I guess it wouldn't be as important to run as thick of a weight.

If you plan to do any hard driving though, and you want to be on the safe side, you would run a thicker weight than 5W-30. I know a couple friends with S52s that run 10W-40, and now that it is summer time, they've all switched to 15W-50. They all run Mobil1 as well. Your S52 isn't exactly a B16A honda engine or something...

-Hey blunt, you might check over on Ih8mud.com in the "80 series" forums - those guys get their oil analized fairly often, so there might be some good info there - totally different mentality motor though, we rarely see 4500 rpm in a Cruiser, but there might be some info on a Delo synthetic alot of the guys run that I hear rivals Mobil 1 for consistent viscosity at different temps, and the detergents in the diesel motor formula keep the zinc numbers down when you get oil analysis done.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
