That's it- I am going back to my good old bag phone with the shoulder strap that I had in 1987.

Yeah, I like slider phones. Plus it has expandable flash memory, an Mp3 player, a 2.0 MP camera, and a way higher resolution screen. So it is a big deal, I think it's a cool phone.

I think that Apple will regret their 5-year contract with ATT but all in all the iPhone is the best thing to hit the market for many high end device users. I think there are many problems that I hope to see worked out in future generations.
First - tell me how you are going to use a touch screen for more than a few weeks without it being totally scratched up and ruined??? Unless you can replace the screen/face/cover it'll be ruined after the first trip to the junkyard or the beach.

Second - how the hell do you type? I'm a PDA user (Samsung BlackJack) and personally I think a qwerty keyboard is a MUST on any email capable phone.

Third - MEMORY... This is and will remain to be the downfall of the phone. I'm not sure about how much storage the phone has but 8GB for iPod/flash memory use is just insane... I maxed out my 30GB iPod... How am I going to ditch my PDA and iPod for 8GB of storage??? At that price it should have at least 50GB and should have another 2-5GB for applications and email/phone storage.

Fourth - as already pointed out... Applications, ActiveSync, Exchange Server, etc. Next generation needs to be more work friendly. My employer gave me a choice - get a crackberry or keep my personal BlackJack and get a credit. I'd get the iPhone if I could use it as I use my BlackJack.

Price is nothing - iPods are $300-$400 now for 30/60GB. They need to make it more robust, a platform that one can use for media, email, phone, web, etc. For that price turn it into a laptop that fits into the palm of your hand or people will just keep using their BB's and iPods. I'll get one in a few years once they get their heads out of their asses and put decent storage and corporate business capabilities on the thing.

I am jelous that you have one though... I wanted one bad even if it was just to say I have one!

            1.

            2. IT HAS A FUCKING TOUCHSCREEN QWERTY KEYBOARD

            3. You can't have your cake and eat it, not yet anyway. The fact of the matter is there is literally nothing (currently) on the market like the iphone, yes there's some competitors coming out soon but even those don't even have things like visual voicemail. Bash it if you want but it is so fucking nice to just hit a button and be able to seek easily through a voicemail, rewind quickly, etc. all with the touch and drag.

There are some deficiencies with the phone, EDGE is kind of slow (although its really not bad, I was expecting MUCH slower, people whine too much about the speed, seriosly. 3G wasn't used because the hardware required to power it decreases the battery life of products by about 30%. ) Rumors have it GPS will be added in in the next revision of the product.

            4. This is your only half-ass decent point.

Honestly, before you bash it, go fucking use one. The screen is a complete nerdgasm to play with, the interface is smooth, its all very intuitive and easy to use and you get comfortable with it very fast. Its fucking tiny, fucking small, and fucking awesome when you consider what all it does and how it does it.

I swear to god, some of you guys have the mentality of "COMMODORE 64? MAN FUCK THAT IT CAN'T EVEN PLAY QUAKE 4, FUCK WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT". Rather then "oh a commodore 64? Interesting, this will definitely open up alot of doors for future technology and it is certainly a nice chunk of technology itself considering what all it does"

there are and have been way better camphones on the market. my year old k800i takes excellent pics in 3.2mp, legit xenon flash allows for night pics (official party phone, screw led flashes)

the problem with most convergence devices, like bill said, is that they do a bunch of things with mediocre quality.

the iphone is pretty cool, i'll admit it. it's got a sweet interface and screen, and has been marketed very well. there's no one device that is great at everything (maybe an n95, except for battery life or no keyboard)

              Agreed.

it's cool steve. if you can survive microsoft beating you down for a decade, you can live past a phone that is very limited past its cool new flashy features

but mr. jobs watch the stock price as screens are scratched beyond use, battery die, memory runs out, and people hate the touch keyboard and sell it on ebay for cheap to get a samsung or treo

Iphones are like the fad toy tickle me ELMO from a few years back that all kids had to have. And this iphone is not different, yeah it looks cool and has some features never seen on a phone before but I promise you that it will not be as durable as my motorola that I use. All I see in the iphone is it breaking or wearing out !!! The only thing that is a bonus for the iphone is it might help some, who have problems , getting laid when out at the clubs !!!

lost in the iPhone chatter this week is t-mobile's announcment

An extra $10 a month, and with a wi-fi phone, all calls are free.

not as a burn, but you just described about 100 phones on the market. unless you love the new design of the RAZR/RIZR, maybe check other phones. Sure it's rated highly but I'd rather have a A1200, or a Sony Ericsson like the S500i

p.s. if this isn't a repost, doesn't this phone look similar? with swappable memory (take hundreds of pics then switch cards, etc) and removeable battery, I'd trust it more, and stylish-er. your girlfriends can have it match her purse or your shades: http://www.pradaphonebylg.com/

I've had the RIZR for a few months and it is the best slider phone out there IMO. I love it. Nice tactile feel (esp. compared to the chocolate). My only complaint is the buttons are kind of awkward at first, but its something you get used to. The camera is also sweet. You just have to be careful when pulling it out of your pocket when you are sitting down and receiving a call. You can accidentally open it slightly, which will answer the call.

Back to the thread subject... my girlfriend got an iPhone and has been using it for about a week. All I have to say is fuck AT&T. They have the worst activation and customer service ever. The phone would not activate and I got about 10 different stories from the customer service people. Turns out she needed a SIM card because one of the techs on the phone destroyed it by trying to force an activation. The iPhone itself is simply amazing, there is nothing else like it right now. You can compare the feature lists to other phones, but until you have used one in your hands for 10 minutes you don't have a clue what you are talking about. It just "feels" good. The OS is very fast and the touchscreen is the best out there.
In the future there will be software updates that will include new features. Also, you can develop apps for it on the web (supports web2.0). Apple published a detailed developers guide and there are already tons of web apps out there. EDGE is slow as fuck, but works alright for googlemaps and simpler websites. It really shines with WiFi.

Cliffs: iPhone is cool, AT&T is not

Sweet. Kind of going back to what Lance said, I know there are a shitload of slider phones out there, but I've always been very satisfied with Motorola phones. I used to be a die hard Nokia fan, but their phones started feeling really plasticy and cheap to me, getting to be more like toys than good phones. Motorola phones feel realy solid, and I was messing with a Rizr the other day in a store, and really liked everything about it.
