    MacBook Pro or G4 Powerbook?

    MacBook Pro 15" 2.16 ghz:

Expensive, Fast, New (ish), Just Plain Sexy.

    G4 Powerbook 15" 1.67 ghz:

Much cheaper, Newer than anything I currently run (OS 9.2.2 rules!) Faster than anything I have currently, leaves room in my wallet for car parts.

So here's my deal: in the next few days I should have a check rolling in from a grant I just got and I'm thinking it's time to go portable. The days of G3 and iMac are getting old and this check is going to be right in between the price of the two computers I'm considering. The old MacBooks are being cleared out now and there's always refurb G4s around, priced at roughly $1800 and $1000, respectively. Features would be similar, superdrive, bluetooth, airport, hi res screen; but the processor difference is what I'm most interested in. Any feedback is welcome!

    Thanks!

Well, some of us are musicians and and graphics people and therefore a Mac is better suited to our needs. Oh yeah, and we also don't like viruses.

Macs breaking is bullshit. I have never encountered a Mac problem that I could not fix, but I suppose that the average consumer probably doesn't want to deal with some of the shit one has to go through to fix their own Mac.

So, you windows people, I pity you and kindly stay the fuck out of my thread if you don't have anything USEFUL to add! :D

I will be doing graphics and music, I have way more knowledge of macs than of pcs and my decision is between two MACS.

So there you have it. Can I get some real answers now please?

And to be clear, I'm not hating on Windows machines, but they are not as optimal for my needs as the computers I'm considering.

i have represented several clients in comsumer claims against Apple for crap Mac notebooks. Multiple problems - primarily with displays and failing mainboards. Whoever makes their screens must be the worst fucking manufacturer of notebooks screens out there.

This is why I suggest you avoid them.

Good to know, but until I can run Pro-Tools on a Toshiba Toughbook I'm kinda stuck. :)

right... but he is saying he is choosing between two mac computers... which, atleast in my mind, means he has already ruled windows out. also he already has had a mac, so he wont be a noob to its os.

i use the powerbook g4 17", my mom has a macbook pro 15"

i dont have any problems with mine, it works good, and its pretty fast. id say go with the g4 and save some money. the g4 will become obsolete quicker though.

I have used Windows all of my life... until two years ago... that is. When I got my PowerBook G4 I never looked back. Sure, I couldn't play Counter-Strike on it anymore, but it did everything else better than windows machines so I just bought a gaming console (Xbox 360, ironically).

As far as your purchase goes, if you're still running OS 9, than a G4 running OS X will seem lightyears better. If money is a concern, then I think the G4 will be fine, but you must realize that Intel is the new standard for Apple, and some cool new programs might not run on a PPC machine. I love my PB G4, and I probably won't upgrade to the Intel chipset computers for at least a year or two (empahsis on 'two'). But if you need a laptop that you have to do some serious video editing or the like, go with the best, MB Pro.

go with the powerbook you will have less crashes, this isn't saying much since i just bought a pro but i need the dual boot for school. the powerbook will be so much faster running native mac apps, and will not crash like a pro.

i have been a ppc (g3, g4) user for many years and never have had software issues. in the last year i purchased a mini duo core and i have have had more problems with it then i have ever had with and ppc mac.

so sweet and simply if you don't need windows get the powerbook, also remember Mac > PC any day.

I had one minor software issue with my powerbook g4 which i believe was actually due to some shitty aftermarket ram I bought. I have since given my g4 to my sister and bought an amazing 15inch mbp. I have heard of hardware issues with apple products but I have never experienced anything myself.

Macs do break that is why they have the fucking genius bar at the store !!!! And you always have to either get a fucking appointment to be seen or wait in line for a long time !!!!

As far as macs being more suited for your needs I can not argue that at all but maybe you should have posted what your uses were going to be for it before hearing what some of us had to say.

And personally after telling the windows people to stay out of you thread unless we have something useful to add well there is always this

I think you should go with the corn cob up your ass !!!! I think it is a better solution for your fucking attitude

My girlfriend bought a Macbook and it has been giving her more problems than my 3 year old PC, and its only 6 months old. She babies the thing and the case formed a crack out of no where after 4 months. She is getting a lot of lock ups and frozen programs (especially Safari) as well. I think both camps over exagerate problems with both platforms. That being said, I have yet to use a PC laptop that runs as quiet, smooth, and cool as a Mac laptop. I love them as they are useable for what they should be used for, sitting with them on your lap, not plugged into all your peripherals on a desk like most people use their laptops.

Let's drive fast and have fun.
