    Best race car video game/console?

I haven't played video games since the mid-eighties (Atari 2600). I'm thinking about getting a console and a few racing games. Which console should I get and which games? BTW, I will limit myself to racing games, nothing else.

    TIA,
    Mark

PS2 has alot of racing games, but they are starting to be outdated although GT4 is still a great game in my book. I just got an xbox360 and forza2, it's really fun good graphics and sounds. PS3 i never played it much but demos in the stores. I was debaitng on rather to get a 360 or PS3, cause i was mostly going to play GT5 or Forza2. But i got the 360 cause of GT5 was looking like it was going to be the same as the last GT game.

PS2 is $129 bucks new. The DFP is down to 89 bucks, and you can pick up pretty much all of those games used from Gamestop for ~10 bucks now, 20 new. Makes a $500 "next gen" system with one game a hard sell for right now.

True words - even with the recent price drop. I have no pity on those who dropped $1K+ on a PS3 last Christmas.

Hands down the best racing SIM to date is GTR2 with the Logitech G25 race wheel. Dual motor force feedback with a clutch and a 6 speed shifter w/ reverse. CANT BEAT THAT. e30 m3...Lamborghini Murc R-GT, 550 Maranello.

Charlie does have a good point. PS2 has alot of games and still is coming out with games for it. And the prices are alot cheaper then the new systems.

GTR is great if you're willing to spend a lot of time fiddling around, it's a hardcore sim and you need to adjust every aspect of your car for each track.

Do you want "real" racing games? or just hold the gas down through the entire race?

I get tired of real ones after a while, especially when I don't have a steering wheel to work with.

My favorite non-real racing games are the burnouts for the xbox (I think a 360 one is coming out soon), midnight club for xbox and PC, and FTMFW Excite Truck for the Wii!
