    Insurance policy question

My mom is telling me that the insurance agency isn't going to let renew under her plan now that I am a college graduate living in a different city than she is (other coast of FL). I've been looking for my own policy but I am faced with about $1,500 every 6 months for a policy with less coverage than what I have under her plan (which is a whopping $400 every 6 months!)

Is she right that I can't stay on her policy now that I'm independent? What are my options? I don't want to be paying $3,000+ a year for insurance when I could have better coverage for $800 a year.

Get an e30 and just pay minimal coverage like me. :)

I bet it depends on the insurance company ? Shop around, I remember when I got my r32 my premiums almost doubled from an 03 1.8t. I switched from progressive to AAA and was paying about 1300 for a full year. I am now paying 1400 a year for my 06 a4 and e30, 300k/100k coverage on my own.

Wrong. Insurance only went up $40 a year when I switched to the E36.

          Back on topic.

these laws generally differ state to state, but in CA, that would be the case. independent = get your own policy. who's your carrier? jeeze.

As far as I know that should not be a problem. As long as you are a student you should fall under your parents policy(I think) BUT honestly it is better to be on your own policy since it has to be done sooner or later. The sooner you get on your own policy the sooner you will get through the high premiums and get down to more reasonable quotes so bit the bullet and get on with it. I have been on my own policy since I was 18 and dont even pay that $3000 a year for 3 vehicles and 2 of them are fairly new ones too....

how old are you? get used to being independent. you'll never get the insurance deal of being a tacked on vehicle to an old folks policy again. get used to it.

Read the contract. It will explain whether "at school" or "at school out of state" is covered. I know for a fact 21st Century would still cover you in this situation. It may just be the company you are with. 21st is actually a really good company to go with even if you end up paying a little more. You can see why here:

Find out everything you need to know about having California car insurance and get a quick, low CA auto insurance quote at no cost.

However, if you are young and want full coverage you are just asking for a raping. If you are young, say up to around 25 or so, and depending on your record, older model vehicle and the state's minimum liability is a must. Unless you are and/or your parents got it like that. It's what I would tell every single parent I got on the phone when I worked there.

I am 22 and I have been "independent" since I started college. I pay for my insurance, though I pay my parents since I kept the policy under them. I have basically paid for everything of my own since I was 17, I put myself through college. I know it's inevitable to have to take out my own policy, but don't you think it'd be stupid if I could just as well pay $800 a year, instead of $3,000 a year for as long as I can?

My record is clean, and the policy IS for full coverage. The policy would be at least 50% less if I still lived in Sarasota, but West Palm Beach has the highest crime rate in FL and insurance sure knows it. Allstate is who I am with now. Every quote I have gotten so far has been within $20 of the rest, no "saving 15% with Geico" for me.

The reason why you will pay so much more now is because you lost all of the multi-car discounts and such, it would help if you got renters insurance for like $20 a month, the multi-coverage will lower your cost. My dad was a State Farm Agent for 13 years, so he told me this info

I dont know about FL, but i have my car on my Moms insurance policy no problem, and i havent been in school for years. my name is added onto the policy as an emergency driver, or something to that extent. in CA the car just needs to have insurance on it, doesnt need to be in your name...
