I used to think the same thing. Because JW is part of such a huge alcohol conglomerate and an industry titan in their own right, they have so much name recognition that even if you asked a high school kid what whisky he drinks he might say, "DUDE WALKER BLACK ON THE ROCKS FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111"
I have gotten over thumbing my nose at it. There aren't many $30/fifth 12 year whiskies that are as complete as JW Black. I have tried many of the components of JW Black separately and they all are lacking in one way or the other. Cardhu and Talisker are IMHO lesser whisky experiences than the whole especially when they are young. Caol Ila is actually very good once you get over the medicinal nose.
I'd only use Red Label as a mixer if I had to.
That is not why I dont like it. I dont like it because I dont like it. Everyone fawns over it but its OK. I will let someone else pay that kind of money for it.
Glenfiddich isnt exactly some small-time operation (and Balvenie is owned by them).
My statement regarding Glenfiddich wasnt to say they had better cheap shit, it was to say that I am not against JW because I am a fucking anti-globalization hippy.
I just dont really like their shit. And I havent shopped in that price range so I couldnt tell you much about $30 bottles of blended whiskey. I use crown for mixing, otherwise I would rather get the specific stuff I want.
I dont see the point of drinking a "cheap" scotch. I dont drink it often so I dont mind paying a little extra. It takes me months to kill a bottle.
I usually get $50-70 fifths myself, otherwise, you aren't stepping up too much.
The JW Black is a great baseline to calibrate your senses. What is it about it that you don't like? It's definitely got smoke in comparison to the Speysides you like so much.

Haha in that price bracket, Glenfiddich's offering is thin, reedy tasting single malt.
i totally agree. Glenfiddich isnt the most robust. THe more expensive JW (blue, gold, and green in the right setting) is good about having plenty of body and all the necessary subtle undertones that create a good scotch.
However, i did have a 25 year Glenfiddich that was a-mazing.
I know its not scotch but I just ran across this and thought I would post it up for those who have never seen a $200k+ bottle of beer before .... ENJOY !!! I am not the seller nor am I trying to promote this item for the seller, I just thought it was worthy of posting due to the price it is .....
I want the "found" wine cellar in france. A rich man walled in his cellar when the Nazi's invaded and make it look like an old wall. Well the guy died and his extended family didnt know about the cellar. They finally refound the cellar like 50 years later. Sure all of it isnt good but the history is insane.
