now that every other bridge in the country is now frantically being inspected, i feel much safer now. I love how it takes a disaster to prompt change.

for example, what about elevators? if the empire state building had an elevator failure and 10 people died as they plummeted from the 50th floor due to a cable snap, you can bet your ass that every high rise building in the country will mandate emergency and mandatory elevator inspections... but of course that won't happen until there's a disaster.

    end rant

They cant. The only thing that keeps these very large posts from jamming into the side of the shaft is the actual weight of the elevator itself. Once the weight is relieved they pop out.

whatever. it's a mechanical thing and it can fail. the point is that until something goes horribly wrong, people won't take action. Today it's bridge inspection, tomorrow it's tunnel inspection or whatever it is....

Do you think that elevators aren't inspected regularly already?

Last I knew, ALL elevators are subject to annual inspections. Should be pretty much international law.

63.7% of D.C.'s bridges are considered no good according to Time magazine, which makes it the worst in the country.

                          Good times!

Did this thread seriously turn into an elevator inspection debate?

I'm waiting for a dam to break next. There is one a couple of hills overt from me that is on the danger list.

I once dated a girl who's father worked at or in some way was involved in the operation of a local dam. One night at dinner he made an incidental remark about how dams should be protected and inspected more thoroughly. He went on to say it would take a very small amount of explosive to flood the entire area they lived in and drown thousands of people. He was a strange person.
