Last night I go into their store to buy blank DVD's, cases, label inserts etc. to dupicate my friend's wedding video. He wants to give out copies to all of our friends and his family members and whoever else.
So I get enough stuff to make about 100 copies and when I get up to the register, the cashier asks me, "Why do you need all of these blank DVD's?" and I thought the guy was just making conversation so I told him that I was doing some duplication as I was stacking all of this stuff on the counter. Then the guy asks me what I am duplicating. I said, "That's none of your business" because I was slightly offended that he would ask me that in addition to the fact that he was just standing there and not ringing up my stuff. Then he says, "You know, sir, piracy is illegal."
Then I was like "WTF?! Who asked you?" But I held my peace and asked to see a manager. Then he said, "Oh.. I'm sorry. It's just that some people make illegal copies of movies blah blah blah..." as he is ringing up my stuff. And I still demanded to see the manager because even IF I had planned on doing something illegal, it certainly was not his job to prevent me from doing it. Then when I talked to the manager he profusely apologized and said that they were given some sort of training class on illegal downloading so that they know how to properly address questions that customers may have about that but he was way out of line.
And it made me think about what could possibly happen if someone brings their computer in for repair and there is content on it that they deem to be illegal? Will they call the cops on you?
