    Taking the Vista plunge.....

Any suggestions on what version to buy? My notebook's HD took a dump, so I will be upgrading the HD, and getting a copy of Vista. Just the middle of the road version, or Ultimate?

IMHO it is not as bad as the naysayers say nor as good ad the MS hacks say. It is better than XP was @ this point in the lifecycle.

I have home premium, among the first things I did when I got it was disable Aero. It is eye candy that saps resources.

The only warning I have is:

DO NOT PUT ANY PROGRAM OR DRIVER IN THAT IS NOT MADE FOR VISTA.

    Good luck

IMO it does not matter at this stage of the game as to which version you get. There is so much new stuff to learn on that OS that you probably wouldn't know the difference for a while. When I upgraded to XP pro from NT4 I should have gotten XP home until I really learned all of the ins and outs of the OS.

I've had it for about six months now on my laptop(premium came installed) and I haven't had any complaints so far. I just use it primarily for school purposes and it's been smooth sailing so far.

I recently purchased an HP laptop and opted to go with XP Pro instead of the Vista OS it was originally config'd with. My previous experiences with first version of Microsoft OSs have resulted in constantly going to their website for updates. I didn't want to do this with my new laptop so a fully sorted version of XP went in. My rule now is not to buy anything Microsoft until service pack 1 has been rolled out.

            Just my $.02

I couldn't agree more. This is the mantra I spew to anyone who asks me about upgrading.

I just recently got a new laptop and it had the bottom of the line version. It dosn't seem like the more expensive versions are nessecay to but, unless you own business or something. But the basic should work just fine. It can be the difference between 150.00$$-399.99$$

I'm not a huge fan, I do IT and I'd recommend sticking with XP SP2 until at least the first service pack is released, as others have said.

And if you're just messing around with the eye candy stuff (or value rock solid reliability) give Ubuntu Linux a try - you may like it (I run both).
