A new chapter in my life... *(cheesy post alert)*

Well... time for a new chapter in my life.
A lot of you, if not most of you, dont know me. Well, I'm a 20 year old hardworking, easy going, pesticide applicating college student. My job at Scott's Lawn Service pays me well, well enough to pay my outrageous bills and still have a little fun... But I absolutely HATE my job at Scott's.

Lately, I've been searching high and low for a new job, something that will pay me just as well if not more, than Scott's. I've been searching for things in my field of study, industrial engineering, and have been unsuccesful finding one that doesnt say "5 years experience a must." So, dissappointed, I began looking for any and EVERYthing that would pay me equally. I'm tired of not getting paid for the work I put in. It's a rough decision because Scott's IS a good job, it's just not for me anymore, I'm better than Scott's.

Well, I woke up this morning and didn't feel so great, so I called out of work. When I woke up, I checked my Facebook account, and looked at my daily horoscope... This is what it read... "Pisces: You've been grappling with a tough decision, and don't know what to do. Luckily, you're about to get a sign that will lead you in the right direction." I took that with a grain of salt and hopped on Craigslist in the jobs section. Right away I saw this job that looked interesting, but there wasn't too much info on it. It said I had to apply in person only.

So since I had the day off anyway until school starts tonight, I figured I'd take my resume over there and give it a shot, just for giggles. Right away, I get a sense of discomfort, a feeling of not belonging almost... Until a guy comes out to greet me, takes my resume, my application and calls me into his office. We chat, shoot the shit for about 20 minutes...

Well before I knew it, I'm taking a tour of the facilities, grabbing some insurance and benefit info, and am now dubbed with the title of CNC Machinist.

The company is BNL Industries, and I'll start on first shift to train, then when this semester of classes is over (since Im taking night classes), I'll bounce to second shift, with which comes a pay increase, and allows me to take normal day classes next semester! This is their website http://www.valves.net/

    Im BEYOND excited...

Do you have any experience or did they hire you because you go to school for this stuff, with the intents or training you on everything?

              Congrats!

Don't worry about the 2-weeks. That particular industry is known for having very short-notice turnovers. But overall congrats! I know that feeling all too well. A similar thing happened to me where I got hired for a really good job informally and unexpectedly. I walked in a place of business, handed in my resume, chatted with 5 to 6 different people in the office (shootin the shit and all) and then the next thing I know I am filling out benefits and insurance forms and the manager was like, "Oh umm, can you come in Thursday around 9:30 or so?" and I am thinking that this is a second interview or something but I get there and they put me in with the HR people to negotiate my salary.

At the time I didn't know if they just goofed and the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing and everyone assumed that the other hired me but I ended up getting my first paycheck overnighted to me that same week.

                        That's awesome dude!

What types of machines can you run? We're getting an Okuma Mill tomorrow. Shoot me a pm if you want to come down to Stratford, mess around and make some shit on it. Seriously.

Mills or lathes? You'll dig them both. I used to be a partner in a small manufacturing company. We made hydraulic manifolds. I ran the milling side of the house, my partner (Mr.Asshole) ran the turned parts side. I had three Haas mills, 2 verts and one horizontal. It's all freeking cool shit. I miss them, used to make parts for my old Superbee on the weekends.

Be careful with those things. I had an apprentice operator forget to lock a part down in one of the vises. The transmission shit the bed when the facemill sucked the blank out of the vise and brought the machine down from 7500rpm to zero in a blink. $36k for a new tranny.

Lathes are even cooler. We had a big Mori Seiki lathe with twin turrets and live tooling. It had a 6 tube bar feeder on it and would run for hours. It would pause every so often to allow you to check dims on the part and make adjustments for tool wear. Then you just push the "go" button again and step back. It even had broken tool monitors to prevent ugly crashes.

Have fun, Good luck and Congrats,

From the looks of it, Ill be on both mills and lathes. I dont know any of the specifics about it.
I have NO experience in the field, and I made that very clear in both my resume and in person, and they were like "cool... We got you on that.." lol. Im going to be fully trained. Im mad excited about it... this is going to look really good on my resume once I get out of school in a few years!
