Schwinn was being weird. They wanted to be different from everyone else. It was an old school thing. Back in the day you could run into normal sizing for seat posts, stems, bars, forks, and wheels, and you could run into Schwinn sizes that were different, and then there were the French bikes... They were different still. The worst are the French Canadian Schwinns. :loco:
They were a combo of French and Schwinn. Good luck finding parts for those odd balls. At least the Peugeots of the '70s and early 80s were French sizes. If you work in a really good shop long enough, you will see pretty much everything. Some of the old school stuff will drive you batty.
Life was much better when the mountain bikes came on the scene. Things began to normalize pretty quickly. When the industry went from 1 inch to 1 1/8 steerer tubes across the board, life became simpler still.
