Truth. My experience with old crappy road bike conversions is not good. Look around for a frame that was made for 700c. Also the geometry of a real fixed frame is much better. I have an old peugeot just like that^^^, I never ride because it handles so shitty. Look at the trail on those forks!

I've been thinking of doing that...problem is I have developed an emotional attachment to my bike hahaha....

I can't imagine that's real. I know some really good bike mechanics that couldn't get all of that stuff off a locked up bike without being seen. It would be a pain in the ass to get the fork and brakes off, along with the cables if you don't have a bike stand.

^ Damn, that sucks. Never seen one stripped that bad, that quick. There was a road bike locked to a post near the shop recently that got picked away at vulture style, but it was like a few day long process. For whatever it's worth, good luck with the rebuild.

Only justifies my paranoia about leaving any of my bikes unattended for any length of time. I had one on my roof rack for half the day yesterday so I didn't have to bother loading it after work. Even though it was parked in our lot with a locking rack, I still ran a cable lock through the wheel and frame to the crossbar. I don't trust any of those sketchers around there. And even then, if they really want it, they're going to get it.

As an aside, my wife has expressed reservations about my new accessory in the guestroom; I really don't see a problem:

Thanks! It's an '88 Diamond Back Formula One, they didn't make too many of them. It was one of the bikes intended for the Formula 1 BMX series that never really took off. Too bad, it seemed pretty cool. They basically set up mock road courses in parking lots and ran the races Grand Prix style, rolling starts and everything.

This one is built up from a frame and fork I got on ebay and all the running gear from the one I got in '88 at age 11. I have a suspicion that it may have been one of the bikes raced in the series; the frame geometry is different than any other that I've seen, it doesn't have a serial number like my old one, it came from SoCal, and a few other clues. It's a reach on my part of course, I have no way to confirm it anyway. Fun bike to ride; very fast for what it is, pretty small for me at 6'1" though.

did you race bmx when you were younger? I have some buddies that did. One of them is a super sick Mountain biking buddy of mine now. He was one of the top dogs back in the 80's, sponsored by GT. Now he does a few DH mountain bike races here and there and some Enduro races. Over 40 and still way better than tons of riders can be.
