How is it that you guys still fail to see what I'm saying?
A degree is not required to be successful. Work ethic and motivation are key. Does anyone disagree?
YES a degree makes it easier to get a good job - as well as it is required to even be considered for some jobs. You guys are acting like I'm an advocate for dropping out - I'm not. I'm working on my degree as we speak. This is not a black and white situation though. There are people with degrees who are utter failures - and people without even a diploma who are an incredible success. That was the only thing that I ever pointed out - yet you still continue to argue that everyone with a degree is going to be massively successful and all the rest will work with their hands their entire life and retire to medicare and medicaid. Holy fuck. It has been incredibly frustrating trying to reason with you guys.Last edited by Turf1600; 12-07-2007, 09:56 AM."We praise or find fault, depending on which of the two provides more opportunity for our powers of judgement to shine."

"Success" is the subjective as well. I skimmed through the thread, but I don't remember ever seeing anyone say "a degree is the only way." It just allows someone to move up the ranks faster, have more opportunities open to them to begin with, and they are required in many fields these days. Many of the same points you just stated. I am still not sure how I was on a high horse about anything.
The main reason I replied negatively in the first place was this:

As for this:
Wow.
If you want to be a mechanic. Otherwise... no.
Second. Atleast he knows what he wants to do.
A trade school taught him that. How many people do you know with college degrees who are using them.
Warning.... your post count is too low to be the new Blunt.
True if you have a degree it may help in getting hired off the bat. But that is where it ends. (unless it is a specialty like engineering). Any lazy moronic asshole can graduate from the university of whatever with a "degree". Employers look at a degree as a commitment. Nothing more. This person was able to commit 4 years to a specific thing so inturn they shoud stay with us for at least that amount of time if we pay them just enough and give them the "benefits" they deserve.
If you started in a sales position when you were 18 and worked at that company for five years you would be up for promotion quicker than a 22 year old college graduate who has been working for a year. 5yrs work experience = 4yrs college.
The only thing holding a non college grad back is promotions to director or vp. If you are that good however most companies will make sure you can acheive a degree on their dime to make that level in your career.
A degree is not by any means bullshit. It doesn't make you less lazy though. I have fired more people with degrees than without. That's my experience.Last edited by delatlanta1281; 12-07-2007, 10:13 AM.Yours truly,
