most of the people in this thread should go back to their school and ask for a refund.

oh really? are you saying without that peice of paper you're an idiot? can't make it in life? only with that peice of paper can you pursue your dreams?
who said he wants to end up as a doctor, lawyer, engineer or dentist? maybe he doesn't need a degree for his plans. but he's getting a degree anyway to better himself."We praise or find fault, depending on which of the two provides more opportunity for our powers of judgement to shine."

No, what I am saying is that that 'piece of paper' is more than that, it's 5 years (in the case of engineering) of knowledge, experience and training that gets me the better jobs and better pay over someone who just came out of HS and spent 5 years working a basic job. At my last internship I worked above several hundred shop floor workers, many who had been there for over 30 years. I made more than them because I took the time to get an education. Is it fair that I was paid more? maybe not. In fact, i would argue that after 30 years they deserved to be paid more than some kid out on his first internship. But hey, to psloan who said 'I've got people working under me and I'm 20-something', BFD. So does anyone with a degree.
He never said he wanted to be any of those things, he said that 'there is not a single thing that you cannot do without a degree that you can do with one'. I proved him wrong.

It all comes down to the person,
a dingus with a degree WILL not make it in the "field".
Attending college and getting a degree is just that. Attending doing the minimum work to get the degree.
Now somebody else uses the college education to become whatever they can with the degree or education they have taken,.
Same goes for somebody out in the working field. It´s only down to the person itself what will happen in the future.
That said.
There are LOADS of jobs that you can´t get without the proper degree and some require VERY high marks as well.
Aircraft engineer/designer in the public sector.
Medical doctors, surgeons and so on,
Lawyers. Judges and the lot.
Almost all higher positions withing financial structures, banks, loan offices and so on.
And SO many more and it´s getting harder and harder. A degree isn´t enough these days. One must show that one already has the ability and experience the employee seeks.
To get the good jobs you must excel, and higher education is simply the shortest time to become educated enough to do so.Gunni
