When I was crewing at Targa Newfoundland this past September, I had a Garmin and liked it. When you are out there, alone and lost, it is great help. Some systems are probably much better, some may even allow to download maps.

got a 650 for the girl and a 660 for myself.

it triples up as nav, music/mp3 player and for mine, handsfree bt speaker.

the 660 also comes with traffic notification.

i have the OEM in my 540 and while people say it sucks that it's not touchscreen, i personally think the knob is a lot safer and easier to use. both are a Navteq variant so it's pretty straight forward on the operations side. i have Route 66 on my phone (iPaq hw 6965) and it works just as good since it stores all the maps on the miniSD; yes, phone, wifi, bt and gps all built into one touchscreen system.

a lot has to do with what you want... big screen? lots of POI? easy interface? Garmin is great abeit chunky (the 600 series) for tight jeans pocket but works great if you're wearing a jacket and have a headphone on. the 350 is more pocketable but the screen is definatley a lot smaller. up to you and your budget.

I have been looking at GPS units for a while but still can't come to a decision. I would like to spend around $300 but $400 at the very most. I was leaning toward the Garmin but they have so many models on there website that I really don't know where to start. Anyone have any advice. If I am going to be doing basic travel from Ohio to the east coast is there one that is lower then $300 I should consider?

I really don't need mp3 or voice commands or whatever. I just want to put in a location (on the device w/o a computer) and it tell me where to go.

              Thanks for the advice.

Magellan 4040, $299 at COSTCO, it has voice text and phone pairing option, wide screen.... Have not found any problems with it. I used a
NUVI 350 this summer and if anything it was small and compact, you can use it to walk around town finding cash machines, restaurants etc. But it's like 400+... Buy one from COSTO or similar store try it out you have 30 days, any model you choose you will love.

Garmin Nuvi. It rocks, Its pretty easy to use. I haven't figured out a way to upload more maps and get it to map some more remote areas but I'm working on it.

I will look into the Nuvi 350. I was heading toward a Garmin so I will definately do my homework and look around on reviews. Does it have pretty extensive maps? Like county (country) roads would probably be on the maps?

OT: A buddy of mine has a Tom Tom ONE XL and its brand new but he has decided that he needs the cash. He wants $180 so has anyone had any experience with the Tom Tom?

I love my TOM TOM 910 that I have had for almost two years now. It was the top of the line model compared to the one xl being towards the bottom ( I think ). I personally like the maps a ton better on the TOM TOM's over the garmin maps. And to navigate through the functions seemed to be easier as well, IMHO. The TOM TOM'S maps can be updated through the intrawebs for free and is very easy. Maps are great and have only gotten turned around one time with it because the area I was in had completely changed the roads around in the area of a new mall and at this time I had not done an update on my unit. Plus if you travel alot to europe there are maps preloaded for there as well.

                            But thats my
