What if your business uses Outlook and you can't sync to it? Then what? You start name calling?

Why can't you sync to it? Outlook contacts are easily sync'd as well as Calender items. Way better than it was on my BB 8100. and for mail, it connects to the mail server and downloads emails from the server.(SMTP, pop3, IMAP) IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OUTLOOK. Outlook is just a mail client.

Of course it can be setup to work with exchange server, your IT department must be run by asshats or....they just don't want you to have access to it because your not important enough :P

The mail program is a pile of shit and is much closer to outlook express (actually worse) than actual Outlook on an Exchange server. The iphone doesnt have shit on Outlook with exchange. For a professional, how it handles your contacts, mail and datebook is night and day compared to the iphone.

Althou i think you dont know what Microsoft Exchange Server does, or how it works with outlook. But you are right it is not meant to be a full blown outlook/computer replacement. It's portable access to emails, you have to give up some functionality for portability.

The iphone is not a smartphone. It is the best media phone though.

To an iphone owner it would be their fault. An enterprise should convert over to itunes for contacts (or thatever the fuck they use) so a "freelance web developer" can watch a dog on a skateboard in full screen.

Yes you do need itunes to sync (unless you use some other piece of software) but did you know iTunes syncs with your Outlook contacts? Whoa what a break thru eh?

As one of those IT department asshats that you describe so nicely, its because we don't want to enable pointless IMAP/POP3 for one device. Not only is it a major security hole, its yet another point of entry into our network, especially as we already have full OMA/OWA Activesync support for our Windows PDA Devices (or BES if you use Blackberry)

And even in the end you don't get push email, contact sync, tasks, calender, etc..(unless you dock the phone into the cradle and sync it that way, which is not practical)

The Iphone is a nifty device (Ipod Touch owner here) However as a phone it has major shortcomings.

No OBEX Bluetooth/File Transfer
No Expandable Media
No Tether Support for a laptop/etc
No 3G..Yes, Edge sucks, and the only reason its good enough, is because you know you can't get 3G.
No Official software available, yes you can hack it, I've hacked my touch, but its nice to see a manufacturer actually support it.
No replaceable battery
No real keyboard, the visual one sucks, I'm sorry but it does.

My personal cellphone is a Sony Ericsson K810i with a 4GB M2 card in it... It can play MP3's, Movies, transfer anything to anything via bluetooth, browse the internet very well, and even works as a wireless bluetooth mouse/presentation device that I use all the time.

For work its my PPC-6700 with WM6/Opera for the Browser, which can also do everything Iphone can, much better and much faster.

So why did I buy my touch? Because it has a great screen, it can plugin to my vehicles, and is a great handy little toy to carry with me on the airplane, but other then that, its nothing amazing.

All your points are true, as a phone it sucks. As a package it's better, n there isn't much in that price range can come close. ($299 4gb, $399 8gb.)

I dont think you know about Exchange. I know you can setup IMAP with an iphone but its a crappy solution at best (I know, ive set them up). The iphone doesnt have the functionality, you agree, but then accuse me of not knowing what I am talking about.

Never said you couldnt, just said it was like outlook express, aka a poor solution (at best). You are the typical fanboi (that 98% you are talking about). Someone doesnt like your cute little media phone and you immediately close your ears to logic and begin your propaganda campaign.

You have to sync everything seperately and it still doesnt integrate email and datebook properly. Smart devices treat them all as one, far superior.

I just can't see myself spending that much time on an electronic device such as that, that isn't a computer or xbox. If I need something with more functionality, I'll upgrade my computer, no need to spend 9 hours on an iPhone rotating it to look at pictures. Like "omfg look at these 867 pictures I took, except I can't send any of them to you because the basic function of picture and video messaging isn't allowed".

Honestly, before I got a smartphone I thought like you. I have internal WWAN in my laptop so I thought, "who the fuck needs a phone for email/internet?"

Now my response on shit is considerably faster. People have pointed that out, "its great now that you have that thing, you actually answer your emails!" It also helps with boredom, like when I am on a train. And fucking with travel itineraries and booking, OMFG!
