Siphoning gas?

Auto parts stores carry locking gas caps you know. They are all standard size, so there aren't really that many to choose from. I just had to buy one for my 88 Jetta the other day. Works and fits great.

I have had people around my neighborhood get gas stolen from their car so I am going to look into one of these

Not all caps work the same way as the E30/BMWs.

The jetta cap is a screw, i know, i had one [factory one too]. WONT fit the e30. Many more cars have the same design as the Mk2 than do the E30/BMW two prong dealie.

I can certinly look, but chances are they dont have ones

Why not just leave it in there? if the tank is completely full, the gas won't go bad that fast. I filled up my car when I parked it at home in January and the gas should still be good when I get home. With it full and closed, less air and water will make it in there, cause it has no where to go, and the gas will last longer.

At least it better...gas was like $2.50 a gal in january! LOL

umm, dont all e30s have a solenoid that runs a pin through the gas cap when you lock the doors making it near impossible to open the gas door? the 3 cars ive owned all have.

I don't know of a locking gas cap, but why should you need one? Your filler door locks...

That dosent last 20 years on a good number of cars, and some E30s didnt come with central locking and locking fuel doors.

a new solenoid is not a hard fix. what cars? early 318s?

I'll have to pull my reciept, it's somewhere. Maybe it was more like $2.95 that day. I'll never forget when I was getting Prem. for $1.45 back in 04. :(

School has a nice crank gas siphoner deal.

Fwiw, I couldn't get a hose down the damn filler neck, I remember after my swap I tried to siphon it that way too and could never get it to work. So I just pulled the hose that connects to the neck and stuffed my hose in that way, worked like a charm.

I did see the drain plug, but it inconviently lined up with the drive on rack I was on, I think it was either a m8 or m10 torx

GF drives an 84 318i [now 325e]

And how hard, do you think, would it be to bust that little door open with a pry bar? Just a matter of choice, id take a locking cap over a solenoid that could fail again.

when I was in high school it was like 75 cents... :p

That is what I have done - fill it. Drop some stabilizer in there if it will make you feel better. That will keep the rust and crap from building in there.

Locking caps from NAPA, Advanced Auto, and Car Quest DO NOT WORK!

Drill a hole in the tank. then cover the hole with JB weld.:p


I've tried as well and I can tell you the tank is not an easy one to drain.
The best way is to get the gas out through the gas pump hole.

you guys are doin too much work. trip your fuel pump relay, and take the hose off your fuel pump in the back. It does all the work for you and its mess free....

But that doesn't remove the fuel. If he's storing the car the fuel is going to be nasty if it's for a length of time.
