    Mars Ice...

UBER cool stuff. To try and land on a dirt covered ice patch on mars from a rocket on earth is like throwing a basket ball from California, only to make the shot with out touching the rim - in Sydney, Australia. Epic fucking win.

May 25, 2008 NASA's Phoenix spacecraft landed in the northern polar region of Mars today to begin three months of examining a site chosen for its likelihood of having frozen water within reach of the lander's robotic arm.

Radio signals received at 4:53:44 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53:44 p.m. Eastern Time) confirmed the Phoenix Mars Lander had survived its difficult final descent and touchdown 15 minutes earlier. The signals took that long to travel from Mars to Earth at the speed of light.

What ever happened to the other spacecraft that landed on Mars? There was Viking 1 and 2 and something else landed there recently, right?

I really, REALLY hope that this thing finds something. The sheer arrogance behind the idea that we are the only form of life in the universe is outright ridiculous.

You mean the two landers that touched down in 04? They're both still operational, well beyond their 90-day initial design for a mission. The Vikings were 76 & 77, so those are long since decommed.

We better get whet we're looking for. GW will melt all of that ice if we don't hurry. :p

What do they plan on doing with the samples?

They have six small ovens on the craft in the TIGA unit for sample testing on site. Lots of new info will come of this. I think the world governments have some knowledge of earth getting whacked in the next few centuries. Lots of new Mars science has been going on as of late. Man on Mars by 2035.

The rovers are still there, but the Beagle lander burned up on entry because some dumb fuck forgot to convert between SI and US units.

its really annoying when people say we are the only form of life.

Pretty sure that global warming only applies to our globe....;)

Global warming would be a benefit on Mars as far as humans moving there is concerned. Space stuff always amazes me

I am incredibly excited about this lander. All of the previous landers are interesting, but their jobs were to examine the climate and geology and stuff. The thing that makes this one so exciting is that its specific purpose is to look for organic compounds frozen in the ice. Even the smallest little piece of organic material being found will be a HUGE deal.

Here are some first pics for those who are interested. http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/0...der/index.html

Soon we will find out if life in our concept of it exists on another planet. I'm kinda spooked to get verification...

Well even if we don't find it on Mars, that doesn't mean that it doesn't it exist elsewhere in the Universe or our galaxy.

I just mean the first time humankind has had a chance, after finding potential sources of life on meteorite samples, now the first testing equipment has made a foray out to test something non terresterial.

I watched it land on TV and via the net at JPL and NASA sites. I had been waiting for this one for a while. I was surprised at the lack of public attention this was given.
