    Impact driver question for mechanics

    I have been wrestling with the impact gun issue because I am getting ready to do headers, suspension, crank pulley etc. and figure getting some tools is cheaper then paying someone.

    I have an Ingersoll Rand D650 1/2" Cordless Drill/Driver 19.2V which uses the same lithium ion battery as the Ingersoll Rand W360 1/2" Square Drive Cordless Impact driver.

    These are it's specs. Do they look strong enough or do I need a compressor & air driver?

    Pound for pound, the W360 is the most powerful cordless Impact tool in the world. Patent-pending IQv technology provides maximum performance, durability, and battery life. Compatible with both the 19.2V lithium-ion (BL192) and 19.2V nickel cadmium (N192) batteries. The IQv Series is ideal for mobile service, automotive, tire lane, off-highway, industrial facilities maintenance, and production applications.

    Features: Ingersoll Rand W360 1/2" Square Drive Cordless Impact

    * 360 ft.-lbs. max reverse torque
    * Less than 6.2 lbs. with lithium-ion battery
    * 1,650 RPM, 2,200 BPM
    * Engineered composite housing with patent pending metal subframe for unbreakable strength
    * All metal hammercase and housing ring for added durability

    Specifications: Ingersoll Rand W360 1/2" Square Drive Cordless Impact

    * Sound dBA -- 90

    * Tool Weight -- 4.8 lbs (2.2kg)
    * Weight w/ Li-ion -- 6.2 lbs (2.8kg)
    * Weight w/ Ni-Cd -- 6.7 lbs (3.1kg)

    i had a snap-on 1/2" impact similar to that one (prob the same) i thought it was a little bit akwards to use under the car. i ended up selling to someone else at work and buying this insted

    it is the way to go if you go for an air powered one

    i also have this one for my 3/8"

      Outside the battery awkwardness is the torque sufficient for tough bolts?

      Thanks.

        I have a Mac Tools Cordless 19.2v 1/2" Peice of Shit. It came in a set with a 19.2v Mac Tools Cordless Drill Peice of Shit. I wouldn't suggest them to Matthew Mayhem. I wish I could have tricked someone into buying them from me. After two trips to warranty repairs they still will not twist a toothpick in butter.

        This is not a buy off the net tool. You need some hands on usage to make sure it's gonna suit your needs.

          the torque was pretty good one my snap-on, but the outside battery thing was a pain and it was way bigger so i couldn't fit it into tight spaces very well and i got tired of building extensions/wobbles etc to make it work for me. it worked well for taking wheels off in the lot where i couldn't run an air hose to the car, but that was about it.

            I have a compressor & tools in L.A. & Mexico, I don't want or need another. I thought since the batteries are interchangeable (and expensive, the L.I. is 100.00) and I could use the driver as an emergency wheel changing tool if it will work for the header then I can rationalize getting it.

            I am still on the fence. I'll either find someone in Phoenix to do it or wait until I go to L.A. next month.

                my brother has that I.R. 1/2" impact. hands down the best cordless/ airless impact i have used. way better than the snap on and mac. we use it on his racecar at the track, because it's hard to get a compressor running with the power draw when the pits are fulll of everyone's trailer setups. it has never let us down.

                  The great equalizer is rust if you have to deal with it. If not, you are golden.

                    You can do all the jobs you mentioned just as easily WITHOUT impact/air tools.

                    That said, if the tool really does generate 360 ft/lb of torque in reverse, then you should have no problem getting any of those fasteners off- you might break them though if you're not careful.
