whens the last time you saw a CEO of a major corporation will full sleeves?
or even a high powered salesman fully tatted up? what you put on your body limits how far you can go in most circumstances. thats because there are stereotypes and closed minds all around you. the world needs all types of labor but someone with a lot of visible ink will stay at the low end of the scale. there are always exceptions but they are normally as rare as the rock star or pro athlete who makes it big. i have a tattoo by the way
Tattoos are more socially acceptable now than any other time in history, and while the "wave" of acceptability has risen and fallen in the last few decades, I don't see it going away completely, I think they're only going to become more and more accepted.
I always swore that when I got mine, I would never regret them, and up until the stars on my forearms, I kept them out of sight. I haven't yet encountered any negative situations with them, in fact, I get nothing but compliments on them. Granted, I'm not an executive or a broker, but I never will be, that's not my life. I enjoy what I do, and plan to stay in this field for a long time, and it's only going to get bigger (low voltage electrical, voice/data communications/network & server administration). So for now, and for the forseeable future, my tattoos aren't putting up any walls, and probably won't.Comment

How many CEO's of major corporations or high powered salesmen have you seen with their shirts off? I'll bet you that a lot more of those guys (probably less of the older ones) have more tattoos than they're letting you see. And have you ever seen high-powered Japanese businessmen? It's not uncommon for them to have full upper-body tattoos. I know this isn't Japan, but socially-acceptable standards have a way of crossing borders.

I am planning to get a lot more, but they'll all be hidden by clothing.

S0urce, I couldn't really tell you what they represent, since they don't really represent anything. I've just always had a thing for stars, and I designed these ones myself. If they represent anything, it's war-era propaganda art, which I've always really been into, mostly the style of the art. These were kind of modeled after that style.
SHITTY pic, they're actually very dark red/black, and I have the same one on the other arm.

So hideous.
I have friends (rward325 for one) that wish they did not have if not all of their tats, the ones that are visible in shorts & short sleeve shirts.
IMHO, I have never seen a picture I would want on my wall for life, let alone something on my body.

And Josh, just because your life choices and desires are such that the tats are not limiting you does not change the fact that they could.
As an example, the Sheriff's Office in Cincinnati will not even consider you for employment if you have any tattoos that are visible while wearing short sleeves. They had a few guys already working there with stuff on their arms - they didn't fire them, but they now have to wear long sleeves year round.
That is just one example. Here is another.
I have a friend who owns a nice trendy sort of casual dining restaurant. His wait staff wears short sleeves in the summer. He will not put anyone on the floor with any visible ink. If you have anything visible and you want to work for him - you are working inthe back of the house - meaning dishes. His place has an open kitchen and the chefs/cooks/line crew cannot have visible tattoos either.Current Cars2014 M235i2009 R56 Cooper S1998 M31997 M3Comment

I totally agree Dave, and I'm not disputing that. I know that they've probably barred me from certain things, but I guess that's one of the drawbacks, and one that I was well aware of when I did it.
But things are different everywhere. It's funny that you brought up the Sheriff's office as an example, because in Corvallis, where I went to college and got one of my bigger tattoos, the artist that did it also worked for the Sheriff's office. He's now one of the top full-time officers, and has full sleeves, along with tons more.
Some business owners have no issue with them, and others do, and that's their choice, I won't say that they aren't allowed to run things the way they choose.
For one more example, when the video store I used to work at changed owners, things went that way. The owners were a retired couple, and the husband was a county Sheriff here for 20 years. I was told by the wife that I had to wear long sleeves to cover the stars, which I had NO problem with, it was her business. But after a couple of months, I was told by the husband that I didn't have to cover them anymore if I didn't want to, and the wife was fine with it.
I'm not trying to argue with anyone, I just want to point out that negative views toward tattoos are a very subjective thing, and people's outlook on them can vary drastically from one place or situation to another, in the same social group or industry. I'm actually glad that this is shaping up to be a decent discussion.Comment

Josh, you are arguing and you are wrong. Yes it is subjective but its damn near universal that tats = unprofessional.
When dealing with clients people judge you constantly. That is why I dont show up in cargo shorts and flip-flops. I dont have tats for the same reason.
SOME business owners dont have issue? Fuck, even to work at Dick's Sporting Goods they have to be covered. That is a fucking $8/hour job. The vast majority of 50k+ jobs would shit on your tats.
Your view is a bit skewed though, you think your boss loves them. Problem is dont you do stereo installs? That isnt considered a profession, its a trade. Tradesmen are usually judged differently. Sure, there are some powerful guys who have them but they are the exception to the rule and THEY HIDE THEM. Just because you have them doesnt mean you are wearing them out and proud. THat is why most get some they can easily hide. Not flaming skulls on their neck.Im now E30less.

Sneeches on the beaches with stars on thars?
I was pulled over by whatever the Az version of CHP is yesterday by a rookie clearly on his first day in the field with two full sleeves. I was pretty surprised.
I got to help train him with 15 minutes of my life in 112 heat that ended with his TO basically ordering him to let me go. (He said my license plate cover was illegal when it's not)

When I was flying for a major many moons ago, one of the rules was no visible tattoos. I have 1 but its on the crown of my shoulder. They even took a picture of it and I had to report any other tattoos if I were to get one.Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!

You can tell who is old and young in this thread. The world has changed a lot since the 70s to 90s people. Peircings and tattoos have became more acceptable in the community. Most people support individualism (if its a word). I have ink, and I don't want a corporate job in the fucked world it is. People don't look at ink in a neg way as much as they used to. If someone with id10t on their forhead, prob won't get a nice job. But someone (as myelf) who has the brains to have a tattoo hidden (your aware they make makeup to cover tattoos in obvious spots which are NOT gong to be noticed once covered, right?).
Reguardless. A tattoo artist makes more on average a week than anyone else who works a 9 to 5. Like cosmetic tattoo artists at hospitals, or the ones who tattoo nipples to breast cancer victims (such as my aunt who faught it with both breasts at different times).
I can do this for hours. But I got things to do. LaterComment
