Two highway trips with a 1 mpg difference in means is not very statistically significant... maybe with more instances in your comparison it would be fair to give correlation... but now you could could have the same highway efficiency in both cases.
If you have your tires inflated properly, fresh air/fuel filters, good oils in the various drivetrain components... it will make your car work more efficiently and probably reduce fuel consumption because of it's efficiency. Also, if everyone did this I bet you would see maybe a 1% overall reduction. This is a GOOD THING...
BUT
Making your energy policy revolve around inflating tires is just stupid. Also, most gas stations charge for air and water at their stations. So, now you're paying the gas man 50cents to fill up your tires. The air is compressed and run by a motor which requires energy. The tires, the hose to fill up the tires, the plastic case it is in, are all comprised of oil. As tires fail prematurely from over inflation, you'll see blow outs that are unsafe and as mentioned before tires wearing out before they should. What does this translate to? More oil to make more tires which are a huge problem for disposal in the first place.
The problem with policies like this is that there are a LOT of unintended consequences. On the face, it sounds great. But ultimately, the costs outweigh the potential benefits.
If this is the logic that they are following for cars... why not get rid of CAT-converters? You know how much back pressure those cause on motors? Talk about aiding in internal combustion inefficiency. Also, they add 30 to 60 lbs to a car - and it takes more gas to pull those things around. SO, why not ditch all cat converters and see if that helps gas prices? Oh wait! Then we will have more global warming! OH NOES!
It requires more than handing out a bunch of tire gauges to sheep to solve this problem.
So you think Obama's energy policy revolves around tire inflation?
Who told you that? Rush? O'Reilly? Fox News?
Obama has pages of enrgey proposals on his website. Why not check it out instead of sucking down second-hand reports from biased sources?
McCain's military draft: Are you willing to bet your life?

but you wouldn't know anything about that.
If a million people saved one mile per gallon every day, the fuel savings would be significant.
I don't know how to dumb it down any further for you, but don't let that stop your attempts at obfuscation.
You're making me smile.

No, I know that's not what it hinges on entirely. However, that's what he's rallying around right now. He's making this point very, very openly about tires. That, and being free of oil in our lifetime.
Simply the comment being free of oil in our lifetime is enough to make a person shake their head and wonder if this guy really has a clue.
Also, Lair, if you're getting bored with this thread you could go back and read my thread on proposed energy policy. I'm sure you'd have a field day with that as well.
you can't influence the right,
they are blind to all that is good,
they are the "Me" fraternity...
their Constitution starts....
Me, The People, and a couple of my friends.....
that's why they have no problem shredding our constitution,
they don't believe in it....
they are re-writing it as we speak.....
they Invented, Perfected and Practice the Smear,Fear, Claim and Blame Campaign...
They are worried though,
they even brought back Ann Coultergeist tonight....
38 psi is improper? I run 40 psi in my truck tires.
Fuck. Get the tire manufacturers on the phone, stat!
Anyway, back to intelligent stuff.
Obama continually makes comments about how he can change the world and how, through making him president, we can do great things together. Like that comment about being off oil in our lifetimes. LOL, why would we want to be? Oil is very useful. The way he talked in Germany, it sounded like he wanted to be President of the World... putting the EU's needs before the US needs because the US has been such a big bad bully all these years. (After saving the entire EU's collective butts in a little thing call WWII, but of course if FDR hadn't waited so long to get in after Churchill begged, then it wouldn't have been so damned hard to wrap up.)
Obama actually sounded apologetic for being American. I understand not supporting policies, but the things he said were disturbing.
it's useless to argue with the right,
they are supplied with "Links"...
it comes with their GOP Membership Card, along with a years free membership in NAMBLA...

Proper inflation of tires is dependent on the weight of the vehicle and the tire size/construction. That why there is a recommended tire pressure and size in the owners manual of you car. The tire manufacture can't tell you unless they know the weight of the car.
