I think there are a lot of good points being mentioned in this thread. Clearly, it is not a one size fits all scenario when it comes to choosing your daily commute car. Things like the type of driving, how much of that type of driving and what you're willing to spend all need to be carefully weighed before taking into consideration. Some folks are happy to make payments (perhaps for tax purposes) while others would rather get a used car which has depreciated some (making it more affordable) yet well maintained so it is up to the task of racking up the miles. How much comfort and features you desire to have while making these daily treks will also vary depending on the individual. Thankfully, the options out there are many.

Criv: it's too bad VW TDIs are still commanding good money. For the distance you cover, it would only set you back a couple of gallons of diesel ;-)

I don't know how you plan to get a smart, every single one coming to the US is spoken for, and buying second hand is very expensive right now.

I've heard that the Yaris has a weak transmission. Unusual for Toyota.
Not that I care, of course.

That could be an advantage, TDIs keep their value extremely well. mk4's with 250k on them still sell on average for around $9500 around here.

That's weird.. the dealership in Buckhead has cars on the lot.

I'm in no hurry. I have 2 perfectly good cars as DDs. I just think it's a wise idea to buy a nice beater. Whatever I get must be an auto as well as my wife will be driving it in the evenings.

PS - If I wanted a smart I'd just order one and wait. No biggie.

I thought the main reason you bought the stereo is so you could enjoy it on the commute?

This is true. I effing love the stereo. It's the single best purchase I've ever made - hands down. To be honest, if I bought the smart pure I would be hitting you up for a stereo for it too - as it does not come with one

Oddly enough, I may have a smart available to model a box in.

Imagine what that install you have in the E30 would do in a Smart!

                      Bump...

I am now in the market for a $15k daily. Anything besides a FIT? I think they are so ugly, I love the mpg... but I can't drive something like that.

Right now I am looking at a mk5, theres some good deals on them around here. Toying with a Hyundai though

God I kinda like the 2008 Hyundai Elantra too lol. under $15k and looks like it gets great mpg. Might go out for a test drive in one later today.
