I think there are a lot of good points being mentioned in this thread. Clearly, it is not a one size fits all scenario when it comes to choosing your daily commute car. Things like the type of driving, how much of that type of driving and what you're willing to spend all need to be carefully weighed before taking into consideration. Some folks are happy to make payments (perhaps for tax purposes) while others would rather get a used car which has depreciated some (making it more affordable) yet well maintained so it is up to the task of racking up the miles. How much comfort and features you desire to have while making these daily treks will also vary depending on the individual. Thankfully, the options out there are many.
Criv: it's too bad VW TDIs are still commanding good money. For the distance you cover, it would only set you back a couple of gallons of diesel ;-)
