Well from my understanding is that it could create mini black holes.
"Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on the grounds that high-energy particle collisions performed in the LHC might produce dangerous phenomena, including micro black holes, strangelets, vacuum bubbles and magnetic monopoles."
I still don't get what it does, something about Higgs Bosson Physics element.Comment

so what was involved in testing anyone know? OR was it just the speed of the collider that will not be turned up until October?Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!

Well the difference is with this one, the speed is just under a fraction of the speed of light, making this the fastest collider yet constructed. And, good for us, even if they do make a batch of anti-matter/dark matter, it is floating in a vacuum, hovering in a magnetic field with little chance to make contact with any "real" matter, so we should not have much to worry about.
Except, if at the millisecond the anti-matter is made and someone detonated an EMP, shutting down the magnetic field, dropping the atom of anti-matter, coming into contact with the bottom of the collider, making for an ice-9 type event.Comment

farbin, you seem to have far greater knowledge of this type of stuff. I understand anti matter and what not but what is an ice-9 type event?Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs!

The test involved firing 1 particle in 1 direction around the LHC. When operational, 2 particles will be fired in opposite directions, doubling their effective speed upon impact.Comment

Ice-9 is a fictional chemical compound, and in a Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat's Cradle), the concept of ice-9 was a new type of ice crystal, that when it came into contact with regular water, it converted/froze every water molecule to be an ice-9 molecule. Then the WHOLE world was frozen over and everyone died, the end.
So, if anti-matter particles came into contact with their matter counterparts, they would create a huge explosion (see: Big Bang) due to the two things, (one a -, and one a +) balancing out their charges, effectively vaporizing them into nothing and the result of the interaction is the huge boom.
I'll find a better explanation of ice-9 as a concept to use for understanding.
