    PS3 gurus input please

I have gone through numerous poorly performing standalone Blu Ray players.

(Sony, Sharp, Samsung) All take an impossibly long time to start up, open the drawer & read the disk.

I just got a 60GB PS3 on eBay and it loads fast like a player should.

Can I use it's drive through USB in my computer?

Where does the downloadable content come from?

What else can I do with it?

If you run Linux on it you can share the drive/etc, downloadable content comes from the Playstation store, and you can do just about anything with it.

It depends if you want a Media Center type machine, a linux computer, game console, etc..

you can't hook it up to your computer to use as a blu-ray drive, but you can connect it to a monitor and use it as a blu-ray player. i assume you have an HDTV, yes?

I don't know about the 60gb versions, but the 80's come with card readers on them. Hell, pull out the hard drive and replace it with a 320 gb drive.

It is connected to my Sharp 46D92U through HDMI. I don't play games but got a 60gb because it has WIFI & is backward compatible. If I find I need more storage I'll get a bigger drive, the primary reason I got it is to watch Blu Ray movies.

I hated all the "reasonably" priced stand alone players and figured for a few bucks more should just get a PS3 that already does all the Blu Ray 2.0 things plus is a console.

Anything that uses BlueTooth can be paired with the PS3. Grab a keyboard and mouse combo and connect them. Then run Yellow Dog Linux on it. Yellow Dog is pretty much geared to being used on the PS3. It has all the drivers to run on the PS3 properly without much hassle. That and you can pretty much run any emulator on there. That means Mario Brothers!

i dunno about all of the linux and yellow dog, but i have heard about it. I run mine with the built in wireless and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse when i feel like downloading new content from 1 of the 100's of sites with free stuff. it works for me, and it makes it really easy to download all of the new firmware when it becomes avail. The player is great, and is actually better quality than most stand alones, at least according to consumer electronics. I love my ps3, its probably capable of so much more, but for movies, its great.

I run yellow dog and its alright, not as fast as ubuntu on my comp, but that is because of the memory.

if you have a FAT32 formatted external drive, you can connect it to your ps3 and back up everything onto the hard drive.

i have YDL on my PS3, and its kind of a novelty. it take a while to get it installed on there, and once its on you realize you should just use your normal computer to browse the internet and use openoffice.org or gaim/pidgin, which is basically all you can do on there.
