    Advice on a compact truck

I am not a truck person. I have no interest in owning one. But, like all “I’m not a truck person” people - I still have need for one (I run my own small business and very frequently need to transport large, but not terribly heavy, items). Up until now I had always had a friend or relative with a truck and a willingness to let me borrow it, but this is no longer the case.

To make my reluctant truck purchase as personally satisfying as is possible, I had thought I would purchase an early 90’s compact truck, stiffen up the chassis, drop & reinforce the suspension, maybe add some power, and fab up my own flat-bed conversion, so that I can move 4’ x 8’ sheets in my compact (building a custom droped minitruck carries at least some appeal for me). These modifications are all things that I can do. My problem is that I know nothing about compact trucks, in terms of what would make the best platform to start from? I was thinking about a Toyota Pickup 4 x 4, but am unsure of the challenges I would face in dropping a four wheeler, and they seem to be much more expensive than other options.

If anyone has an opinion I’d love to hear it.

why not get a full size 1/2 ton f150 with a full size bed? you could carry 4x8 sheets of plywood without any modifications at all. the 6 cylinders ones get pretty good mileage.

Im not sure as far as the modding part goes. But if buying used, 22REs are bullet proof. If you want to take that into consideration, on not having to work on a POS all the time.

Yep - as a previous Toyota truck owner, that is a durable motor.

I have a 96 or so Mazda B3000. Thing takes a massively good beating. The only thing I've ever had to do with it is replace the alternator after the original one died after a bit over 10 years. It was what was purchased after we traded in the giant Dodge Ram that sucked more gas than a hooker does cocks.

S54B32 swap in progress. Status: Getting There

The only problem with dropping a truck is that you will also affect its ability to tow and/or haul anything. I mean you could still haul a few light loads (as you indicated in your post) but it would defeat the purpose of needing a truck in the first place. Like if you were hauling plywood or sheetrock you wouldn't be able to load in more than a couple of sheets without the truck bottoming out.

                          Diesel, 45mpg

Probably won't really be able to tow anything though lol
