Man, this shows the main difference, some people own BMW's and other people DRIVE BMW's. I actually have 2 e30's and an e46. I bought the e46 first, because it was nice and new(at the time). I didn't even know how to change a flat tire at the time. I started doing the BS E46 mods like lights and eyebrows. Eventually i got into Autox'ing and everything changed. After i got my first e30 (325e turbo), my whole world changed. Now i daily drive my M42 e30 and rarely take out my e46. I can see where it all started. The e46 is definitely the date ride but its my least favorite(feels like a pig) and i need to sell it (automagic FTL).
But nothing chaps the ass of the cooch new bmw driver (usually in mid 30s and wearing a bmw baseball cap) then whooping up on them in a dirty 84 325e. And knowing that my car is fully paid for, but who wouldnt want a 60 month finance on a heavy slow car?Leave a comment:

You have to get around a bit more.
In more rural areas where there aren't any mass transportation services a car IS a necessity to work to eat to LIVE. While everyone has taste it isnt particularly applied to every aspect of their lives. Its basic function over form. A car is just one aspect. Aside from the sticker price it only has the value that the individual(s) attributes to it. Whether or not taste and status are synonymous is up for debate but my point still remains.Leave a comment:

Why am I even bothering
The distinction you made which i had a problem with was that EVERYONE considers status when shopping for a car.... I dont feel that this is the case. Its a faulty assumption to believe that EVERYONE does.
Some people cut their hair because its too long.
Some people buy new shoes because their old ones have holes in them or have grown too small.
Some people buy decoration because THEY like it and for no other reason.
EVERYONE is a fair statement. EVERYONE has subjective taste...thus, EVERYONE who buys a car will apply that within their budget. A car is not a necessity, people have other alternatives to transportation and those who could care less about cars have chosen them. However, you realize we live in a social society in which perception/choice/taste is status. Thus, I stand firm, EVERYONE will consider taste/status when buying a car while being conscious of perception of others. And AGAIN, some more than others.Leave a comment:

I tack that on and I get "But still!" My dad's coworkers all think that I'm spoiled and that my car is $15k for some reason...I hate people that buy cars just for the "status symbol" When I meet new people and the topic comes up on what I drive and I tell them a BMW M3, most of the time their eyes get wide. I tag on "its a really old one" just to make them disappointed.
To me, a 3-er is not a "luxury sedan" its a sports car.
I'm not gonna lie, I kind think it's a piece of shit...But every time I try to replace it, I can't find anything better.Leave a comment:

Heres the point you made.
All people consider "status" while shopping for a car.
I disagreed. I gave an example of the best selling car and the fact that it doesnt carry a particularly high "status" yet more people buy it.
You said EVERYONE considers status.
I again simplified my initial point in saying that not EVERYONE views cars like you, I and others on this forum. To some people cars are simply transportation devices.... nothing more nothing less.
Here is where you fall short:
I disagreed. I gave an example of the best selling car and the fact that it doesnt carry a particularly high "status" yet more people buy it.
Never said "HIGH"
...and again
not EVERYONE views cars like you
Never said that either, I said everyone considers taste/status while being conscious of how people will perceive them....AGAIN, some care more than others...which is what my initial point was, but you cannot deny that one will consider perception of others when choosing a car. Its just like getting a hair cut, buying shoes, buying decoration.Leave a comment:

Again, are you saying that people are not aware of what others would portray them as while driving in the car they chose? I know its a strawman argument, but really....taste/status are synomymous. And again, status may be a priority to some, and not to others. Either way, you have status regardless of which direction you go in.
Status: the position of an individual in relation to another or others, esp. in regard to social or professional standing.Leave a comment:

lol wut?
Some people actually view cars merely as transportation devices. Point A to point B being the main function. It is people like us who attribute value and meaning to them aside from the cost to manufacture.Leave a comment:
