Carbon Motors Shows Off New Police Car
New Type of Police Car Unveiled
Carbon E7 Police Car in Chicago

    All about the Carbon E7

The Carbon E7 is a brand new kind of vehicle from the ground up - it's a 30mpg, diesel-powered, four door sedan - with a 300 hp engine that can go 0-65 in less than seven seconds, has a top speed of 155mph - and is being compared to a jet fighter as far as technology goes inside the car.

Yeah, it's black and white, and certainly intimidating looking, but the list of features it comes with is downright crazy; considering the current main choice of cop car (that being the Crown Vic) probably doesn't even come with power windows!

This bad-boy has "integrated external and internal surveillance capabilities, radar, LoJack, an automatic license plate recognition system, radiation and biological threat detectors and 360 degree, high visibility, built-in LED emergency lighting - along with that slick engine described above.

It also comes with what Carbon calls ORCA - the "On-board Rapid Command Architecture" with a large touch-screen main display and a separate touch screen keyboard that lets the driver actually communicate and control all the equipment in the car. Nice touch.

Anyway, the big question remains this: where can I get one? And will they built them for TV stations? OK - not really. In fact, the price tag hasn't been set yet, but Carbon says it will be "close to what cities currently pay" for police cars.

In reality - the big questions are 1)Where they are going to put the factory to build these things (the company is headquartered in Atlanta) and 2) Will cities around the nation and world make the switch from old and reliable, traditional police cars - to this new style of them.

The company makes a good argument - saying firefighters, ambulance companies, and yes, even the garbage man drive custom-made vehicles - so why should police officers work out of converted passenger cars?

The company hopes to begin deliveries by 2012 - so there's certainly some time between now and then for all this to get worked out.

As a cop I really only like the rear seat area. Two things are awesome about that. One, being able to sit your prisoners in the seats with out them bitching about sitting on the cuffs. And then the seat belts already forward for you to grab and latch them in. Thats one of the most uncomfortable parts of putting a prisoner in a car, reaching over them to get them buckled in.

Other than that, all the rest is just flashy shit that we'll likely break if ever implemented.

Exactly what I was thinking! I'm sure many of us have familiarized ourselves with our local area police vehicle of choice (where I live Ford Crown Vics rule the day). Problem is, car rental places use the same car, as does some cabbies. Then there's a few civilians who use them for personal transportation, so sometimes (especially at night) it can be a tad confusing to determine if you have smokey behind you or someone is merely driving someone to the airport. This new vehicle looks like nothing else on the road - you could probably spot it with one eye closed on a foggy day looking the other direction.

NC DMV will likely buy up some, paint them some mundane green metallic color, and throw hubcaps on them.

                            Scheming bastards.

Seems like BS, it will be a long while until police move to anything radical and away from standard autos. They would have to retrain everyone, source parts from just one company, etc. Don't think it will happen for awhile, and when this 'future police vehicle' comes about, it will likely be made by the same big companies that make them now, ie Ford, Chevy etc
