I tried downloading the program from the VLC site (vdeolan.org/vlc) and once that was done, said program would not play my recently downloaded episode of TopGear which I burned to a CD. I was just wondering if the version for 2000 and later Windows OSs had an issue with trying to work with Vista. So what could be amiss here?
I've never had any VLC issues with my XP Pro, but it doesn't seem to jive with my brothers' Vista OS.

Did you download a Codec pack along with the VLC player?
Well the whole point of VLC player is that you don't need to download codecs. It has TONS of codecs built in and will play any file format except Blu-Ray.
OP, there may be a specific version for Vista. I have 64-bit Vista and a lot of software coded for older versions of Windows just doesn't work. Try searching the site for a Vista specific version.

I had a feeling that might be the case with Vista - looks like I'll need to do a bit more sleuthing.

Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 19.1.0 : K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a free collection of codecs that allows you to play all your video files and online media.
Thanks for the feedback fellas. I just sent off an e-mail to my bro with the links that were posted here. At some point he will get it downloaded then can give it a whirl tomorrow......since he forgot to take the 'Clarkson - Thriller' disk I burned for him.

does it play *.MKV files?
I usually stick to media player classic, but I've had issues with some of the newer high-def recordings.
